Re: 2020 "Snaps" Around Glacier National Park

Pete Is that the old Alder Trail? If so, it was once a maintained trail from the Sun Road to Granite Park...shorter than the trail up from the Loop, but steeper. It was abandoned, officially, years ago because it was heavily inhabited by grizzlies. Years ago, on the Highline Trail, I think I spotted...

Re: Elk Mountain Trail

Pete, that's an accomplishment! I think that Elk Mountain is harder than the trail to Brown Mountain Lookout. The Brown Mountain trail at least gives you a number of timely switchbacks to moderate the climb; not so with Elk Mountain. And I think you already knew it was going to be dry. Well done.

Re: Latest 2020 Season Opening News

Personally I'm trying to channel my frustration into resolve to make it work, even if that means the long approach into Two Medicine from Park Creek. If you actually get the chance to do it, you will find the route into Two Medicine via Park Creek to be very decent. There is the opportunity to visi...

Re: camping....around labor day....with a toddler?

My limited, and frustrating, experience with Reservation dot gov recalls that they block you from making reservations more than six months in advance. At least that applies to the National Forest campgrounds. Could that be what the problem is?

Re: Changing permit

If things look tight for catching your shuttle, you can just leave the line at St. Mary and catch the shuttle. There is a Backcountry Desk at the Many Glacier Ranger Station that can handle your permit.

Re: 7/20 to 7/24 Permit Options

My thoughts are below: Also, not sure the hike up to Janet is worth it (with a backpack). Stay at the Waterton River site, and then dayhike to Janet or even better, to Lake Isabel. . Lake Isabel is in the Park Creek drainage area on the western side of Two Medicine pass. You may be thinking of Lake...

ARR and CAM to close early?

I just saw on the Backcountry Information page that ARR and CAM will close from 8/25/2019 to 6/15/2019. It has to be related to the fire in 2018, but does anyone know the exact purpose of the early closing?

Re: Question about June 2019 on the east side of Glacier

The earliest that I have been to Glacier was June 24. It so happened that the Sun Road opened on that day. Here are some of the details: Logan Pass and the Hidden Lake trail were open. Piegan Pass trail from Siyeh Bend passable til about 200 yards below the pass. As we were studying how to work arou...

Re: Picking up permits

We're visiting next week for 7 nights, 5 of which will be BC. These are spread out over a few different permits, and we were hoping to modify one of them (add an extra night). When I go to pick up the first permit, can I pick up all of them at once? And, do you think they would entertain allowing m...

Re: Gaiters necessary?

Does anyone know how much river/stream crossing there will be? Many thanks! No unbridged stream crossings on this route if you go via the Belly River Ranger station. If you take the cutoff and cross the outlet of Cosley Lake you wade the river at that point, but gaiters won't help that situation.

Re: Day hikes - Belly River, Lee Ridge

I think the Lee Ridge Trail to the intersection of the Gable Pass Trail is one of the best day hikes in Glacier. And, if you are so inclined, continuing on to Slide Lake brings you to an area that doesn't seem to get a lot of use. That side trip will have you cross Gable Pass, with views of Papoose ...

Re: Five Pass-Red Eagle Loop (Filling out Permit Q's)

Spencer, I assume that you are preparing an on-line application. I believe that requests for off-trail (Dispersed Camping) requests have to be made in person at the Backcountry Office.

Re: 2018 Backcountry Permit Buzz

I can't say when Polebridge started issuing permits, but it's not a recent thing. The backpack for which that permit came was in 2009. They have a telephone link to the Apgar office. I don't mean that the Polebridge computer is tied to the one in Apgar. No, they literally pick up the telephone and c...

Re: 2018 Backcountry Permit Buzz

I don't think that permits are issued (normally) at Polebridge - you may want to confirm that you can do that. Apgar would be the closest location to Polebridge to get permits. Scott I have picked up a permit in the past at Polebridge entrance station. I think they open about an hour later than Apg...
