Re: Trail Runner Collides with Bear

I noticed quite a few of the cleared trails are posted for bears frequenting.
Haven't read anything this year about the Lake McDonald-Sperry Trail mountain lion that liked to linger between the horse barns and Crystal Ford -- for the views, most likely.

Coeur d'Alene marathon, half, 10k, 8-23-20

The Coeur d'Alene Marathon, Half Marathon, 10k and 5k runs are being offered as both on-site and virtual editions this year. https://runsignup.com/Race/ID/CoeurDAlene/nsplit Remote participation has proved to be a winner this year. Will be interesting to see whether orgs continue in the future. Less...

The "Special Olympics Montana Virtual Edition" video that follows has some sweet moments, as when a pup chases after a golf ball.

Re: Latest 2020 Season Opening News

Fairbanks142 Much easier for an individual Park to make contemporaneous changes to social media -- see Twitter for hourly updates on GttSR closures -- than to make changes to a site overseen by an agency of the federal government. I would also expect many users to go first to the Park's social medi...

Re: Many Glacier campsite

The clients of Glacier Guides I have met (including me) wouldn't fit the description of people needing pampering, elitists, or any other unfounded assumptions. 1. They have little time, and prefer that logistics be handled without their involvement. They still carry all their own gear plus some grou...

Answer from Glacier Guides: To clarify, nobody can book backpacking permits in advance this year, including us at Glacier Guides. Permits are still available though! We just have to obtain the permits at the office in the park the day of. ... We may have to be a little more flexible depending on wha...

Re: Many Glacier campsite

Why the hell are they canceling campground but still looking at opening Swiftcurrent cabins and many lodge. Makes no sense to me. Some possibilities: a. They can control the number of people in cabins and the lodge to maintain some form of distancing but cannot do so in the CG. b. Campers place hig...

Re: Sad News - David Parker has passed away

Thank you, Debby and Kathy, for word of Dave's passing and options for handling the board in the future. Dave certainly launched something huge when he started the Chat. He made a difference in many people's lives. I heard stories about those get-togethers, Debby, that you and he hosted, but unfortu...

As a quick follow-up, here again is the Protected Lands database, to help identify unknown hike possibilities near you.

Visit Glacier in this mystery novel (grizz are involved)

Picked up mention of this book on another site; have not read it myself. Nevada Barr, a former Park ranger, has produced a series of books set in national parks and featuring Anna Pigeon as a ranger. Blood Lure (2002) is set in Glacier NP. I have not read any of the series (so won't be able to give ...

Fun, local hiking projects in the year of coronavirus

With Glacier a deferred dream for many this year (and Canada closed to me), it's time for the imagination to get some exercise, leading to stronger legs! A couple of hiking websites I frequent are posting "alternative hikes" folks have dreamed up, such as redlining a very local spot. My local hike -...

Re: Latest 2020 Season Opening News

My decision has been made for me with the border closure— I won’t be able to make it to the Park this summer unless the border opens and in my opinion, it won’t open for tourism any time soon. Maybe September if I’m lucky. teapot , Be of good cheer. Canada's backcountry will be free of rabble from ...
