Re: Walk up availability of hotels

Last year during September the availability inside the park was zero. Outside the park was very challenging. I would bring the RV.

Re: Our Last Trip to GNP

When I arrived at work this morning, I had expected to get a lot done today. But, after reading a few paragraphs into your blog, I suddenly realized that I had to read the whole thing. Wonderful story telling, and great trip report. Hope to see more in the future. About fifteen years ago I broke my ...

Re: pod? tri vs mono

I almost always bring a lite-weight aluminium tripod (1.7 lbs - 2 to 5 tall) on my day-hikes and backpack hikes. Carbon-fiber tripods generally weight more. I prefer the ones with a cloth case to keep dust and dirt off the sliding tubes. Tripods are a necessity if you are going to do bracketing for ...

Today the NPS opened:

Highline Trail is open, but snow remains past Haystack Butte.
The Ptarmigan Tunnel is open.

Indeed! :D Hudson River School, of a place ending in -kyll or Gap. The vast glories of nature, o'ertowering mere mortals, poised on a cliff at center right. (Horses, too. At least one.) Here are a few of my favorites from the Hudson River Painters: http://www.catskillmountaineer.com/images/waterfal...

Re: a small crisis has arisen in my vacation

Maybe we could start to add motels to the FAQ. I would be happy to provide info on places I have stayed. When the hotels are booked it is hard to find good places to stay outside the park.

Re: a small crisis has arisen in my vacation

When I tried to get a room in any of the hotels in the park last September, I was told that there were no rooms, and no possibility of getting a room. I asked a number of times over several days and got the same answer. To fill in those gaps, I ended up staying at an excellent motel in Choteau, MT a...

Re: Yeah but we needed the rain, August 2013

Really enjoyed reading your trip report. Sorry about your kids bailing and the 36 hours of rain. But, backpacking always has their highs-and-lows. I do a lot of winter hiking, and hypothermia is a constant thought on my mind. Here is a tip on dealing with wet feet. Next time you are in the grocery s...

Re: Road will NOT be open...

According to GNP's Flickr page they appear to be at Obelin Bend. So, hopefully by next week they should have the visitor's center cleared out. I don't know about the east side. Maybe they still have the big drift to clear?

Re: North Fork suggestions?

Bowman Lake will give you a better "wow" factor. It is just beautiful. The road to Bowman lake is not that enjoyable. There are two common day hikes there. But, showing up to see the lake on a nice day is worth it. Kintla lake is also nice, but doesn't have the wow factor that Bowman Lake has. The r...

Re: Luxery camping experience (New Business)

I had originally saw this kind of camping several years ago in Minnesota. It was geared towards Winter camping. They had fixed tents, and they had canvas tents that you could rent along with a pulk sled. It was marketed as "Luxury Winter Camping". Really didn't appeal to me, but I guess some people ...
