Re: 2014 Permits

Received my permit earlier in the week. I ended up with my alternate choice. Oddly enough, my first choice is still available. Not sure why I didn't get my first choice?

Re: 2014 Permits

Haven't heard anything yet. Does anyone know how many applications they got this year?

Re: 2014 Permits

Maybe they haven't reset the availability in the software yet. We'll have to watch it in the coming days. Been trying to convince my wife to move to Montana for some time. She is afraid of not finding a good job. This year I did everything backwards. Booked my flight and car rental before sending in...

Re: Modified Amtrak Empire Builder Schedule

You may remember fro my 2012 trip that I hiked from Ahern pass out to the loop in my sandals because of 2 purple toenails! Farmgirl and I hiked from KIN to Kintla campground in sandals! Just before my 2000 trip to GNP, I smashed my big toe. Wore one hiking boot and one Teva for almost 100 miles of ...

Re: 1 Week, 3 Big Hikes

I consider Margaret the most beautiful lake in the park and tried to get up to Ipasha once but obviously took the wrong route since we were trapped by thick willows. The problem with herd trails is that they fractionalize. Ending up on an undesirable herd trail is inevitable. It happens to all of u...

Re: 1 Week, 3 Big Hikes

I did a little checking on Chaney Glaicer last night. http://www.catskillmountaineer.com/GNP/chaney-glacier-10.jpg This image from the USGS shows the Chaney Glacier in 1911. You could just hike up from 50-Mtn CG and walk right onto the glacier. I suspect that the access to the top of Chaney Glaicer ...

Re: 1 Week, 3 Big Hikes

Personally, I think that the Sue Lake Plateau is worth spending a day exploring. The ramp up on the east side of Raven Quiver Falls (560') is fairly easy without a full pack. Then spend another day hiking up the Mokowanis lake, Margaret Lake, Ipasha Lake. But, most people do not allot two extra days...

Re: 1 Week, 3 Big Hikes

I believe Ear Mountain must have done this route before. You can read his brief description of the route here. It really depends upon your skill level. I would describe this route as more mountaineering then hiking. Likely to be more icy later in the season. Probably more snow earlier in the season...

Re: 1 Week, 3 Big Hikes

Several years ago I was very interested in visiting Sue Lake, the overlook to Margaret Lake, and Chaney Glacier. In particular, I wanted to photograph Sue Lake. I seriously considered the route you described. The topo maps make it looks doable. But, I did read about someone who tried it, and remarke...

Re: Chance of a walkin permit .........

This is not quite correct. Many backcountry camps have an odd number of campsites. Three sites being very common but several others have 5 sites. In the case of an odd number of camps the number set aside for reservations is rounded up. So camps with 3 sites have 2 reservable and camps with 5 sites...

Re: Chance of a walkin permit .........

Half the campsites are for advanced reservations. The other half are for walk-ins. So, you probably have a good chance of getting a walk-in permit. Get to the office before they open in the morning, and be flexible in your route.

Re: Concession for in-Park chalets open for bidding

I hope there will be no change. The listing for the bid has this statement: ...The Director, pursuant to 36 CFR, Part 51, has determined that the existing concessioner is not a preferred offeror for the Contract. Any proposal, including that of the existing concessioner, must be received by May 19,...

Re: My Glacier Route Planning tool

Great little tool. I use it often. Greatly appreciate the work you did for us. Like the idea of the mods. Will make it much easier to use. Will check it out soon. I did notice a couple weeks ago that I could not enter St Mary Falls to Gunsight Lake. Had to enter the camp site in the middle. Maybe an...

I have dined in Babbs, St Mary's and Many Glacier's Hotel. I liked MG hotel the best. But, there is new management in the hotel, so it could change.
