Re: July visitation surpasses 1,000,000 for the 1st time....

Looks like things may finally be quieting a bit... Yesterday, Apgar, Avalanche and Two Medicine campgrounds did not fill...it is the first day in several weeks that any of the three have not filled... Also Many Glacier and Rising Sun didn't fill until around noon... The last few days they have been ...

Harrison Lake

I have Snyder lake on my September agenda but it is looking like that will likely be closed for at least another few weeks. As a substitute, I'm considering hiking Harrison Lake while staying at Apgar Campground. Does anyone have information regarding the difficulty of the ford of the Flathead curre...

Re: Sperry Chalet closed for the season, 2017

Yes, on to Plan B...no Sperry Wine Bar... At least I know a little in advance... It will give me a few extra days to spend at Bowman Lake and Two Medicine... This is the second time in the last 6 years that I had an existing reservation cancelled by Sperry... In 2011, they decided to close t...

Propane Stove/Grill

I generally cook my dinner over the campfire most nights that I am tent camping. Unfortunately the fire restrictions currently in place won't allow that (and I think there is at least a 50/50 chance they will still be in place come September)... So, I may have to buy a small propane cooking stove/gr...

Re: Smoke?

Sperry will only open if the path is clear from Lake McDonald as that is the route that their supplies are delivered by mule train (propane, linens, food, etc.).

Re: Smoke?

Looks like they closed the Sperry trail from Lake McDonald due to a fire in the vicinity. This is going to be interesting for guests at the chalet who are looking to head out as well as those wanting to get there for their stay. Trail Closures North Boundary Trail north of Goat Haunt - wildfire dang...

Distance and elevation gain/loss are pretty similar and I've done most of both hikes...

For scenery, Ptarmigan Tunnel is better...

Re: No Reservation - Best First Come Sites?

Absolutely Rising Sun; Bowman is too remote to be a home base for the bulk of your trip. Just get there extra early; it only requires sacrifice one morning and will yield you a great home base for several days. I plan on getting to Many Glacier Campground at 4:30am to get a campsite and that is in m...
