Re: A Few Questions

Thanks again. Another related question. Seeing that there is an excellent chance that both the Many Glacier (Swiftcurrent) and Two Medicine Camp stores will close just prior to my getting there, is there anywhere else to get firewood in the vicinity of the campgrounds? Sorry for all the concern abou...

Re: A Few Questions

Thanks for all the advice everyone! I realize now that it was a mistake to try to do Iceberg Lake the same day I drive in on GTTS Road. I don't want to rush my first time on GTTS or my hike to get it in before dark. According to your information, I'll probably obtain provisions at Columbia on my way...

A Few Questions

I'm still in the process of nailing down the details of my trip to Glacier; but it appears to be 9 nights, September 7-16, 2008. My current plans (they have changed many times since I started planning three months ago) are to enter from the West side as I will be staying at McCart Lookout (a rentabl...

Re: Highline Trail to Many Glacier (via Swiftcurrent)

I'm afraid that the overnight at the chalet is out because I'll be at Glacier from September 8th through 15th. Based on all that I've read, I'm going to do my best to train prior to my trip and then give it a shot. If I get to the chalet and don't think I'm ready for a similar length journey to Many...

Re: Highline Trail to Many Glacier (via Swiftcurrent)

Thank you all for your input.... I have several months left to prepare myself. I'm a lot more comfortable planning the 2008 trip now that I successfully pulled off a similar trip in September 2007 (only focused on Grand Teton/Yellowstone for a week rather than Glacier). I'm also going to spend two d...

Highline Trail to Many Glacier (via Swiftcurrent)

I figure I should have time for 4 day hikes during my stay in early September 2008. I'm generally a 5-10 mile hiker, leaning closer to 5 in general but am in good shape despite being a type 1 diabetic at 43 years old. (I did 5-9 miles a day at Grand Teton/Yellowstone for a week in September 2007). I...

Re: Bowman Lake Trailhead

Thank you for your input.....Actually, I'm considering a change of plans.....eliminate the three days I had set aside for Jasper National Park and increase Glacier from 4 to 6 days and Banff from 3 to 4 days. I already plan to take the following three hikes; 1. Grinnell Glacier 2. Highline 3. Icebur...

Bowman Lake Trailhead

Is there a "best" or favorite trail you have from Bowman Lake trailhead?? I'm planning on hiking one day in this area. I think the choices are Akokala Lake, Numa Lookout, Bowman Lake Head, Lower Quartz, Middle Quartz.

Re: Glacier Campground Recommendations

I camped at Slough Creek for three nights....What I meant was that most of the areas I visited from there: Mammoth, Grand Canyon of Yellowstone, and most of the trailheads at Yellowstone were within an hour's drive of where I was camping. Whereas, I guess that it is two hours?? from Sprague/Avalanch...

Re: Glacier Campground Recommendations

Thanks everyone.....I'm now thinking that I split up my camping with at least two nights at Many Glacier and the trailheads there....seems like a pretty universal opinion that this is the place to be....(I also didn't realize that it was two hours from Sprague Creek to Many Glacier, I am thinking li...

Re: Glacier Campground Recommendations

I prefer the smaller, less RV'ish type campgrounds.....I have heard good things about Sprague Creek and Avalanche...are these scenic non-crowded campgrounds?? It appears they are located centrally and adjacent to the GTTS road. I prefer to hike from like 7:30AM to early afternoon andd then spend my ...

Glacier Campground Recommendations

It seems like different campgrounds may be preferable depending on what is important to you. I would appreciate any input that the group might have on the top couple choices for me would be. I will be tent camping and here are my priorities... 1. Scenic Beauty (nice view) 2. Large or Separated Sites...
