Re: 2017 Sun Road Opening Contest

Well done!!!

Enjoy the virtual keg!!!

Someday I'll savor those virtual suds; probably about the same time that my Buffalo Bills win a Super Bowl....

Re: Cracker Lake

It is 6 miles to Cracker Lake... The first 1.5 miles have horse dropping issues as there is a ton of horse traffic; at about 1.5 miles the horses turn off the trail to Cracker Flats... You can also catch a horse ride all the way to Cracker lake but people rarely do, so the last 4.5 miles of trail ar...

Re: 2017 Sun Road Opening Contest

I've got to win the keg one of these years...

It will be a better year than most for park rangers dealing with the tourists complaining about the road being closed (because they booked a trip in June without doing any research)...

I'll say...

Re: challenging Long day hikes

I have done the following... Instead of an out and back, I'd hike Swiftcurrent to Chief Mountain Customs through Ptarmigan Tunnel...there is a shuttle that GPI runs at 3:45PM that can take you back to Many Glacier from Chief Mountain...it is a 20 mile through hike...much better than an out and back ...

Re: Best/favorite car campgrounds?

I have stayed in most of the car campgrounds at Glacier... East side (where I generally spent 80% of my vacation nights) I love Many Glacier Campground (I've spent 90 nights there); the location is ideal for hiking and right in the mountains... Rising Sun Campground is also in an excellent location ...

Re: First time to Glaciar with Family!

Agree that the whole week on the West side isn't optimal... I've been at Glacier for 150 nights since 2008 and I generally spend 70-80% of my time staying on the East side... I'd recommend at least a few nights at Many Glacier or St. Mary or Rising Sun...even though you can't get advance reservation...

Re: What hike is this viewpoint from??

Floral Park and Gunsight Pass are quite possibly my favorite two hikes in the Park (and I've done almost every day hike)... That said, I agree with the others... Floral Park involves route finding, much steeper ups and downs, and crossing a glacier...plus 13 miles and a total of about 4,000 feet of ...

I've only seen the first 20 minutes so far and can already tell that it will be EPIC...

Thanks for sharing views of the Park that almost no one will ever see in person...

Re: Who wants to play "Name that Trail"?

Pretty amazing photo Jay...

I did the Kishenehn loop; it really is a scenic, peaceful and not too strenuous 17 miles with the added benefit of hanging at the Ranger's cabin towards the end.

The only downside is 4 creek crossings along the way.

I don't remember that view however....

Don't know Pete's north fork photo; never been there.

Jay's I believe is Lower Sperry Glacier and sometimes chalet.

Re: Hikes For Your Best Friend's 1st Visit

Pete,

Yes, I guess that I consider there to be East side hikes, Logan Pass (or central) hikes, and West side hikes....

Numa and Apgar Lookouts are also nice (have done both twice) but Huckleberry has always been my favorite...
