W16 -- 16 more weeks until the race

Boosted the weekend run from about 8 miles to about 11 miles. Pace was good until the last
1.5 miles and then slowed quite a bit, but that is to be expected. I was back in the house
only about 10 minutes before rain and hail poured from the sky. That was a very close call!

Does anyone have any idea when Looking Glass highway might be passable? The summit is
at 5977 ft, and it is a heavy snowfall year, but it is on the east side so it must not have
as much snow as Logan Pass. Would it be feasible, perhaps with microspikes, to run/jog/walk
the course by Memorial weekend?

Also, is there a chance Looking Glass might not be open for cars by race day?

Bob,

Keep it going. I did a run 12/7, 1/31, 2/28, and a couple miles today. So my plan is one run a month whether I like it or not. Maybe I'll try to do 5 miles the day of the Glacier Marathon and call it a sympathetic marathon.

Jay,

I'd be delighted if you just wait at the Two Medicine entrance and run the last stretch in with me. I'll
be easy to spot -- I will be wearing my red "Freda's" hat (the most valuable piece of attire I own!).

This was May 12th, 2012. You could have run it easily that day.
I drove it the opposite direction than the race will be run.
"Down hill" in this video will be "up hill" for the runners. The road after the video ends continues down hill to Kiowa Junction.

I love driving that road but I don't always make the opening day :(

pete

This is will be part of the uphill side of the course. Lousy views
Fathers day in 2012 I think.

W15 -- 15 more weeks until the race

Thanks for photos and video, Pete. I remain optimistic that it will be passable
to foot traffic -- perhaps with microspikes -- for Memorial weekend and look
forward to a practice run on the course then.

Another good solid 11 mile run on Sunday. New running shoes ordered and expected
this week. The plan is a long run next Sunday to Fish Creek with spikes if it passable.
Looks wet and slushy on the webcams.

W11.

I did a 4.12 mi run yesterday, and 55 mi on the bike today. Just had some pizza and a Two Hearted Ale.

How's the training going Pizza Bob?

I'm actually counting this as W10. The race is W0.

Some traveling and work, along with annoying foot pain, have hampered my training,
but I continue to press on. The most important thing is the weekend long run -- gotta
build up the stamina. I've been doing an 8 mile out and back trail run that has
an elevation gain of about 500 feet. Still pretty tired by the last mile, but not sore.
Hopefully in two weeks I'll progress to 8.5 miles with 1000 foot gain -- which is about
the gain for the race course. All things considered, there is still plenty of time
to be fully ready.

The race course is actually really nice. First 5 miles up 1000 feet while you are
fresh and full of energy, followed by an almost contiguous steady downhill.

Reaching the summit is like reaching middle age -- it's all downhill from there onwards :D

I plan, weather permitting, to spend Memorial Weekend with a day jogging the race course, at least
from Kiowa to Two Medicine road. If anyone else is interested in joining for that please reach out to me.
Pie for Strength in East Glacier afterwards is mandatory, of course.

8 miles, 500 feet up and down again. First 6 miles were good ... the last 2 were not :(

I was hoping to move to a 1000 foot hill starting next week, but probably won't make
that decision until next Sunday morning as I head out.

On a more positive note, my daughter biked to the Avalanche parking lot today
and hiked to Avalanche Lake. She and her friends were the only ones on the trail.

How's the training going? Week 6, week 7? I'm having a tough time getting over 6 miles. My feet don't like it. My last three runs:

I'm stuck at my 8.5 distance. The feet still hurt starting at mile 6. Took a few days off
to let them rest. I've been trying some inserts on short runs to get used to them -- will try
it next weekend on the long run.

Jay, if you are doing sub-8 minute miles while training, then make sure to bring a book
to read while you are waiting for me at the finish :D I don't track my pace or distance
(GPS in redwoods is extremely poor), but rest assured it is closer to a 9 than 8 minute
pace.

Next week I will switch to a 1000 foot climb on the long run. We'll see how it goes from there.

Thanks Bob. Training is something I've been doing for years.

Stick with it. You can only do what you can do and then see what you have when you toe the line.

The news is that I am deformed :D :D More precisely, Haglund's deformity (heel bone spur
that stretches the Achilles tendon). Running hills aggravates it, so I'll literally "cool my heels"
and stick to flat training for now. Did somewhere between ten and eleven miles today and finished
strong. This is very encouraging. Breakfast at Luna's after the race?

BTW, when a doctor asks if taking Advil helps with the pain at all, do NOT provide an answer like
"I'm not sure if it is the Advil that helps, or the whiskey I wash it down with". The doctor rolls his eyes
and shakes his head quite a bit before providing a lengthy response.

Bob, glad you have an answer, and you're back on track with training. Better that you felt good after 11 miles.

Yesterday, I was 20 miles from home and broke a front derailleur cable. Today is was a flat. Hopefully that uses up my quota for mechanicals this season.

BTW, it's usually better to say you wash it down with vodka. Docs have more respect for vodka. :D Whiskey is so blue collar.

W5 (5/21)

Four more long training runs to go!
W4 (5/28), W3 (6/4), W2 (6/11), W1 (6/18), W0 (6/24)

Solid 10-11 miles again, though I started out slow. I did a bit of weed whacking yesterday, and
the twisting motion is hard on the back so it took a while to loosen up. All is proceeding well.

I didn't sign up for the race's camping, so I intend to get up very early and drive to the start. The
website http://glacierhalfmarathon.com/race-day-2/ still only says
"We’ll have a schedule and more info on race day transportation soon!"
I'd prefer not having to walk 13 miles after the race to get the car.
