Lake McDonald Lodge--What's up?

Postby PeteE » Tue Dec 05, 2017 9:37 am

What's up with all the rock on the "outgoing" side of the parking lot?
Clyde didn't know. 8)
Do y'all know?

I don't know but I would guess the NPS plans to armor the banks of Snyder Creek against the increased runoff they expect due to the fire. The creek gets quite close to the lodge and a big flood could cause a lot of damage.

Pete, good to see you posting a report here. It is nice for all of us that don't see the park off season. Hope to see more in the future and thanks.

Orin's suggestion sounds logical. Dumping those rocks on the parking lot pavement and then moving them off again has to damage the pavement.

Seems like I remember reading a press release from GNP about several projects to mitigate the expected severe runoff next spring caused by the loss of vegetation in the Sprague Creek watershed and delays to work on Sun Road along Lake McDonald. I remember it but can't find the article. Google didn't help me this time.

I believe Orin was correct. I went out this weekend and all the rocks in the lot were gone.
It appears that most, maybe all, were placed by the bridge over Snyder Creek down by the lodge.
Here's a short video showing where I believe they were placed.
Next question I have is: Why cover them with "dirt"?

Also hiked up to Avalanche Lake yesterday.
Inversion down below but nice, albeit chilly, at the lake.

I've had some rock work done at my place and dirt and/or gravel was used between and on top of layers to aid in packing the rock tightly. I've never seen the rock just covered in dirt though. Not sure what that is about.

Nice shot of Avalanche. Doesn't look like there is much snow there either.

Hi Sue
I doubt he ID's my truck Jaybird by "sound", but he certainly knows both of us by sight.
I have no doubt whatever that both Bonnie and Clyde know us by sight.
Many, many times over the last 5 years if either bird is within sight of the parking lot entrance, they'll fly down and follow my truck until I stop.

Very nice winter picture of Avalanche Lake, which I shared with my dad. Seeing Avalanche Lake for the first time was one of his most moving memories of a trip to Glacier years ago.

Thanks Meg! Here's a few more:
I hated those tiny images...so
Until I figure out a better/easier way to display large individual images from Flickr, go to the album here.
You can then click on them to expand them to full size if you want.

It's a bit tedious to get to this "full size" link in Flickr, but maybe I'm just stupid 8)

This is just to get the spammer's name off the board "headline".
This was Sunday and hardly any snow out at Lake McDonald.
It'll probably look a lot different next time I get out there. 8)

Merry Christmas from Glacier National Park.

Staying home today. 6F as I type this 8) Still too chilly for me to snowshoe.
Old age creeping up on me I suppose. Harder to stay warm, especially my feet.

Anyway, I road out to Lake McDonald to take some pictures and check on Bonnie and Clyde.
The temperature had risen to a balmy 12F by the time I arrived. A little breeze chilled things off even more.
Very few people out there as you would expect on Christmas Eve. Four cars at the lodge when I arrived.
B&C were waiting. They both looked fine, Clyde curious as ever.
Not a good day for pics at the lodge but I did get a few back at my favorite overlook.

Here are a few more snaps from Christmas Eve Day. There are descriptions below the images in the slide show.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/98975350@ ... 9877970671

The roads were slick and icy in places. Packed down snow and the park had not sanded.
I was sitting in Jaybird reviewing pics when I looked up and saw this in my rear view mirror!
He slid off just moments before I took this picture. The guy in the other truck was rolling to a stop when I looked up and saw this in my rear view mirror.

Image

A young(18-21?) local couple slid off the road in to the deep ditch.
Long story short---
I got my shovel and towing strap to help out.
The fellow in the other struck and I helped dig out the snow. He was also high centered somewhat in the ditch.
Jaybird was too light and I had to tow from the rear, not best in this situation.
I can't pull from the front with Jaybird's low "plastic" cowling, etc. in front.
It was a tough go.

More help arrived in the person of PizzaBob!!!!!!!!!!! and his two daughters who had been skiing--They're hard core :)
The guy who had the GMC rig finally was able to pull him up on the road after a several tries and a LOT of digging and all hands pushing!
Very hard for the fellow in the GMC to get any traction on the icy road.
Lot of snow in that ditch. I moved to the passenger side to dig the packed snow away and went to my chest in powder LOL!!
All in all it was fun to get the kids out of the ditch.
The young man allowed that he and his girl friend were "glad we stopped".
Well, we ALL said that there was no way we weren't going to help on Christmas Eve...No way.

Pizza Bob invited me over to have coffee with his wife Sandy and family in West Glacier.
A great idea after nearly an hour scrabbling around in the snow
Jim and his family are wonderful folks. I got to hear first hand about their trip to Australia this summer!!
Fun stuff and THANKS for the hospitality!

Cheers all

Thx for sharing the story and some pictures from the frigid bowels of Glacier Park. I can't even imagine what it's like to be in that cold again; especially when you went in chest deep, yikes! and what luck for PizzaBob to come along.

I grew up in Havre in the 60s and the memories of that cold makes me shiver. Good luck for all of you up there as I hear the temps are quite low. Just burrrrrrrrrr!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the Valley of the Sun.
