Sperry Building Burned

Post by poky5mom »

This was on the Glacier Facebook page. This is so sad
Thursday afternoon at approximately 6:00 pm, the main building at the Sperry Chalet was lost to the Sprague Fire. A highly skilled group of firefighters were staged at the Sperry Chalet over the last week. Those firefighters had an extensive hose lay, sprinkler, and pump system installed to protect all of the structures associated with the Chalet. The high winds experienced this afternoon pushed the fire to the east. The firefighters, supported by 3 helicopters, made a valiant stand to save the structure but were unsuccessful in saving the main Sperry Chalet. The firefighters remain on site, ARE SAFE, and are currently actively engaged in protecting the remaining structures. (DS)

saw this on Facbook, so sad, my first hike in the Park, day one was a hike up from Lake McDonald to Sperry Glacier campground in 1994. The Chalet was closed then, but a ranger who lived in one of the building showed me around. A few years later they updated the chalet and opened it again. I have hiked past it two other times and stopped in for lunch. Hope the fire firghters are staying safe!

Very sad. My wife and I spent a night there several years ago. Hiked out via gunsight pass. One of the greatest walks ever. Ran into hockey ref along the way. We chatted about Athens.

Hope the firefighters stay safe. I know they did their best.

Just awful. I wondered earlier when I saw the Avalanche trail closed due to fire if it was spreading. Terrible news.

We were just there in July. It is the most beautiful place in the world......to me. I'm sure there are a lot of tears tonight. Not just for the building itself but for the history and all the peace and respite it has provided through out the years.

Oh man :(
A very sad day. Just glad the fire crew are all OK.

I am staying in Apgar Village right now and can see the fire burning on the mountains. Since it got dark the fires are visible in three different areas.

Also a ranger told us that the Avalanche Lake trail has been evacuated. In addition to that that the Lake McDonald Lodge has been closed for the season due to the employees having to breath so much smoke.

A lot going on here! :(
The mountains are calling and I must go.

I am so shocked and saddened to read this. Glad I made it up there once, but it wasn't enough.

Hope the crew up there remains safe.

This is just hard to believe. When I first saw the headline I thought it was some type of a cruel April Fool's joke but it is not April.

My first hike in the Park was to Sperry Chalet in late June or early July 1970. It has always been such a wonderful place and our family had wonderful times when we stayed there in 2001 and 2008 and we had recently discussed trying to go there again next year.

Our sympathy goes out to Kevin and his family and all of the Chalet staff who have made it such a wonderful place to stay for so many years and to all those who, like us, love Sperry Chalet. It is like having a death in the family.

And our thoughts go out to the firefighters for their safety.
