This is just heartbreaking. I'm grateful and relived that the firefighters are safe, but what a loss :( Did a two-night stay there with friends when we visited Glacier, and it remains one of my favorite memories from the trip.

What a devastating loss. I am remaining hopeful that the other buildings have been saved. While historically none of the other Chalets have been rebuilt after destruction, perhaps in the future they will consider this one.

My heart goes out to Kevin and family as well as everyone that cherishes their memories of this special place.

Loss of structure is nothing compared to loss of life, so I am thankful that the firefighters are safe and appreciate their efforts.

From 8/30 article on the Sprague Creek fire from the Hungry Horse News:

To the east, the fire has yet to reach Sperry Chalet. Firefighters are staged at the chalet should the blaze get there.

The chalet is in rocky terrain and the fire crew is confident they can suppress a blaze should it reach the historic structure.

Glad the firefighters are safe, but heartbroken over the loss of the irreplaceable chalet.

Sad post by Kevin on the Sperry Chalet website today:

"September 1, 2017 - Friday

Fire at Sperry Chalet

We are saddened to inform you that Sperry Chalet has been lost. The Sprague Fire reached the chalet around 6:00pm on Thursday, August 31. The hotel building was rapidly engulfed by fire.

We are grateful for the efforts made by the National Park Service and the exceptional team of firefighters. Unfortunately this fire could not be contained. All firefighters and persons associated with the chalets are safe. It is still too early to know the full extent of the damage. The fires are not out and the crews are still fighting the fire in the Sperry area. The Sprague Fire is likely to continue burning until Glacier Park sees a turn toward wet winter weather.

This event marks a significant moment in the history of Sperry Chalet and for Glacier National Park. We are deeply grateful for the support we are hearing from all our friends and guests. Sperry is a loved place for a great many people. It has been a great privilege to share the special charms of Sperry Chalet with so many people, we are grateful to be able to share the grief from the loss. Thank you for your support."

Sad beyond sad!

We were there in August 2010 and 2012. A magical place that words can never properly describe nor pictures do adequate justice. It just had to be experienced in person to be able to appreciate the indescribable beauty. For those of us so very, very fortunate to have stayed there, it will remain a fond memory that grows fonder as time passes....

So much appreciation for those who risk their lives fighting these wildfires!!

Can't help second guessing when I read the latest Hungry Horse News report of the chalet fire, with only six firefighters on the ground to protect the entire chalet complex ... and apparently no access to the roof. Quite the contrast from the famous 8/31/36 Heaven's Peak fire (81 years to the day!) where employees "worked through the night to ensure that embers landing on the hotel were doused" in order to save the Many Glacier Hotel (from 'View from the Room' by Djuff and Morrison).
While I hesitate to second guess since I have never been in the middle of a forest fire, the demise of the chalet suggests that the fire managers may have been too confident the chalet was protected by the rocky terrain surrounding it. From the Hungry Horse News...

"A highly skilled group of firefighters were staged at the Sperry Chalet over the last week. Those firefighters had an extensive hose lay, sprinkler, and pump system installed to protect all of the structures associated with the chalet. The high winds experienced this afternoon pushed the fire to the east. The firefighters, supported by three helicopters, made a valiant stand to save the structure but were unsuccessful in saving the main Sperry Chalet,” the Sprague Fire incident command announced at 6:45 p.m.

On Thursday morning, fire information officer Diane Sine provided more details. She said no other structures at the complex, which includes a dining hall, a bathroom, and two cabins, had been lost.

She said six firefighters battled the fire on the ground, while four helicopters were in the air with water drops, but how, exactly, the chalet caught on fire, Sine couldn’t say.

The chalet was not wrapped with protective material and was not treated with a fire suppressant gel commonly used on homes. She said logistically, it is difficult to wrap a building the size of the chalet. Each role of the fire resistant material weighs about 100 pounds and the crew couldn’t get to the top of the two-story building.

This is a terrible outcome, but I can't imagine second guessing professionals and people who knew/loved Sperry as much as any here. Comparing Many Glacier hotel to Sperry seems a little unfair too.

There's something funky about that quote though. On Thursday morning, the Chalet had not yet been lost. I'm guessing it's supposed to date Sine's comments as Friday morning?

This photo from the first page shows a ladder clearly. Perhaps they meant they couldn't wrap the entire roof?
