IMPORTANT: No Permits Being Issued

Postby joybird » Fri Aug 11, 2017 9:37 pm

Today I went to pick up my reserved permit for a backpack that was slated to start tomorrow and going from St. Mary to Two Medicine. I was told that, because of the fires and fire danger, reservations or no, the park is not issuing ANY backcountry permits at this time.

They were unable to tell me how long they expect this to be the case.

So, even if your itinerary is not in a section of the park that is currently experiencing fires, and despite the fact that the backcountry campsite status report indicates that the campsites have openings, you may not be able to get your permit after all.

It is not only the folks with cancelled reservations at Sperry that are having to scramble for a Plan B.

As you can imagine, things are a bit chaotic here right now!

Just a heads-up...

Well that really sucks, but is understandable under the circumstances.

Part of the rationale might be this front that's forecast to come through this weekend with high winds...and maybe no, or little rain.
They could easily have bunch more lightening started fires in new areas and the current fires "blow up".
So they're minimizing the number people in the back country.
Hopefully they'll open things back up asap.
I can't imagine the headaches this will cause packers and rangers both :(

Yep, there goes my trip. Had a week in country from Sperry to Two Medicine starting today. I couldn't go anyway but my friends are now out of luck too.

They started issuing permits again this morning! It was perfect timing for me because I had planned to pick up my permit today.

Thanks for the good wishes folks, I just got back late last night. It was a great back country trip for me. Perfect weather during the whole trip. Temps never got higher than 75 and never lower than 40. I had mostly blue skies and a nice breeze. As far as crowds are concerned I did not see very many people out there. One of my days I didn't see a single person on the trail. I happened to meet chatters TnTammy and JustMike on the trail. Tammy recognized my picture and brought it up. I also ran into Jason and his Dad on my way to Lake Francis. They looked good and ready for the second half of there long backpack.

After getting out of the backcountry I decided on a whim to make the 10 hour drive to Idaho to see the eclipse. It was a long drive and I ended up sleeping in a field for the night somewhere near the Idaho border (They were charging $800 for a room at the Best Western). However, the total solar eclipse was spectacular and I'm glad I got a chance to see it.

I'll post pictures and videos later when I get a chance to gather everything.

No permits being issued again ... (maybe a good thing ... given the park-wide smoke!)
