It was pretty chilly Sunday AM--~25F when I took this one when just setting out from the Polebridge Ranger Station.

I like cloud formations like this. Big Sky country :)

The North Fork is rising and the current is increasing speed. This week will be sunny and in the 70's.
I expect all the creeks and rivers will be doing the same.

Image

This mountain complex ? dominates the first 5 miles of the road to Kintla Lake---which is why I took so many pics of it. 8)

This is a three panel panographic I did hand held.

There were 7 in the family who built this cabin in 1913! Man and his wife and five children. The husband died the first winter.
people today don't know what "hardship" is---in my opinion 8)

This is the last private residence on the way to Kintla Lake. I stopped here for lunch and turn around.
Image

Looking back towards Polebridge.
The snow was a foot+ deep where I am standing. Wind packed and settled it was very firm. Too bad the road wasn't the same when I hiked back. :(

I guess I'm just going to shut down this thread altogether.
SMUGMUG's password routine doesn't seem to be able to hold a password for me.
And I'm not going to change passwords every 2 weeks.

That's why all the above images will stop showing up at some point.

Not a big deal since stats show nobody looks anyway LOLOLOL!!!!!!!!!!!!! 8)

Thanks all the same

Well, we've (I've) enjoyed seeing the park in the winter (over the past couple years). So a big thank you for the effort.

I have to say that I don't log in and look every day, so I'm sure there's stuff I miss, but I get ya in that not many read and not many comment. It seems like a small community until you go and look at the member list and then the counts on some of the old threads.

Off to change oil

Pete,

Nice photos! Do you own x-country skis? That snow covered road might be easier to travel with them.

No point in starting another thread.
I believe I found a photo site that will work well for me.

glaciergeezer.smugmug.com

These panographic images are from this morning over at St Mary.
I like doing them. This summer I plan to get some from more difficult locations.
Thousands of people have shot pics from where I did these.
I think they came out well for a snap shooter.

These two are two wide too see here. Click it.

This is one of the many great views you have on US89 when coming down the hill to St Mary--if coming from East Glacier/Browning.

I took this this afternoon coming in to East Glacier. There are many great views from both US2 and US 89---if you can find a place free of utility poles and lines.

More coming if they look good enough.

Shot this up at the boat dock at Rising Sun this morning at around 8AM. My 16mm wide angle lens couldn't quite get the mountain and all the reflection in the horizontal position--so I turned the camera vertical and shot 3 frames and stitched them together to get this image. It was a wonderful experience to enjoy this view undisturbed by people. Hard to convey the "experience" in an image.

Very nice! The reflection shot is beautiful. Is there still snow in the Rising Sun area? Were there many people camping at St Mary?

Thanks Tibber and Teapot! :)

Yeah, there are still snow drifts around Rising Sun. I didn't walk back in the campsite area but here's a picture looking toward the west end of the CG.
There weren't many people at all in the St Mary CG. No surprise since it was Mother's Day weekend, and....
No services open. No water and no bathrooms or pit toilets open anywhere except ONE--and I found it just in time to avoid disaster LOL.
The pit toilet down by the Red Eagle TH was thankfully open---avoiding a trip to the "woods". 8)

These pics haven't had much work done on them. Most can be improved with some work.

[b]Turning around and looking the other way. I walked up to Sunrift Gorge from here--about 4.2miles

More pics from the walk later. Gotta go to work. These are from Saturday morning driving in to St Mary via Duck Lake Rd.

These Pasque flowers were all around where I was standing for above pics. Just weren't quite ready yet

Thanks David!

Here's a few more snaps from last Saturday, the 12th.
Saturday was a beautiful day so I walked up the Sun Road to Sunrift Gorge that afternoon.
There were 12-15 people on the road walking that afternoon. Saw one guy headed back down the road with skis on his backpack.
As you'll see there are still large patches of snow still around.

I spotted this moose down near the lake Sunday morning. His antlers just started growing---maybe 4 inches long.

The clip is 5:16 of a moose just being a moose. I didn't say a word so leave the sound turned up! 8)
All you hear are the birds.

Image

Just before Sunrift Gorge, I hiked up the old two track to check out the burned Ranger Cabin.
Image

Then headed cross country paralleling the road below that was off somewhere to the left until I reached the Siyeh Pass trail.
I just wanted to see what that area looked like. There were still big snow drifts remaining in some places.
You have to be careful walking in there....stepping through the deep snow, or having a tree fall on you would be trouble.
And this time of year with the snow coverage, there's always a chance of a bear encounter.
Most of the bears are down here in the lower elevations foraging at one time or another.
I'll post a short video clip I made of a grizzly sow and her cub driving back to camp that afternoon.

Bears are everywhere all the time

Sow and cub 45 seconds

Image

Nice view here. Glacier lilies just beginning to bloom.
Image

Sun Road below while looking up towards Gunsight Pass in the distant background. There is still a lot of snow up in the Gunsight Pass area. Snow coverage looks much like the Logan Pass area as seen in the web cams.
Image

From the road walking back to Rising Sun
Image

Wild Goose Island is just a speck in the distance in this one.
Image

Still deep snow in some spots.
Image

Snow/ice piled up against the shoreline
Image

Wild Goose Island is very lower right
Image

I still have a few more images to post along with a couple short video clips, one of a grizzly sow and cub, and a bull moose. Nothing great but seeing animals is always nice. I had to kinda hustle back because I needed to buy ice before the St Mary Grocery closed at 7:00PM. It was virtually the only place open anywhere in St Mary or Babb. period.
So I brought dinner with me. The steak was going to be for Sunday evening, but I came back early.
I settled for a nice 1/2lb burger with a simple, but pretty good vegetable "medley"--yellow and zucchini squash, carrots, shallots, garlic sauteed in ghee and butter.

Image

And of course, a burger cooked just right over a perfect fire. 8)
Image

Lousy selfie. I was hungry and tired. Long day, and I'd been up since 3AM.
Great dinner though! One doesn't always have to eat crappy "camp" type food when camping.

Thanks Jay.
That moose bull did look a little "ragged" didn't he? LOL!
Long winters will do that to a guy. 8)

Here's a couple "lame video" clips from last weekend.
This one is about 7 minutes.
