One channel is advertising this as the coldest temps this millennia. Then they add, "since the year 2000."

I was out yesterday for a long ski, and it wasn't that cold (around 0F), but it was hard to keep the cheeks and nose warm into the wind until an hour or so into the ski. Today was colder (-8F or so) and on a more open track, and that makes the point to not even think about skiing this week. I'll probably even skip doing a walk even though I can really bundle up. A -40F on the new wind chill chart is really fricking cold. At -60F, well, that's not fit for man or beast. :D ...and about -80F on the old wind chill chart.

Yeah, that 20-30-40 below zero is not my thing either.
That bitter cold is missing us thankfully. Forecast is for 9F here in the AM, 10F in West Glacier, and 2F in Polebridge.
Beautiful here today and looking same tomorrow.

30F when I went skiing at the golf course around 2PM. Virtually nobody there.
Runs were pretty fast imo. Groomed this morning but apparently been ski'd on a fair amount and packed down.
Most were like you see in the pics and 2 minute video when it uploads.
Packed down by the skaters 8) I don't ski in the classic tracks so I have to deal with the slick groomed part.

Stratus this morning. Snapshots out Jaybird's window. I was 10 minutes late for the best color. Sky was AWESOME then.

Doesn't look like much of a slope, but as slick as it was, I got some decent speed going down. Same place as in the video.

2 minutes

looking back up. The weather was close to perfect for doing anything outside!
Around 30F and little to no wind, beautiful sky---and no people when I was out there.
Didn't fall once in 2 hours, but I got a black eye now from that "face plant" yesterday.

Ya, we're in the lows 70s this week but will be slipping back into the 60s starting Friday for at least a couple weeks. Heh, I'm just try to warm you all up.

Pete, I did a face plant hiking on the 19th; hadn't done one for a couple years. I became one with the dirt for a short moment. I was surprised my face didn't bruise this time so I must have just barely hit it. I did get a scratch and one rather large knee bruise that is still keeping me company.

Nice pictures but they make me shiver.

Hope you all survive the brutal cold.... thank God I only remember what that was like.

PS We've had an extraordinary last several months here in the desert of Arizona with heavy Oct residual rains from the hurricanes and another rain plus we got some early January rain so the wildflowers are already blooming; some that we haven't seen in many years like a lot of London Rocket and Cheeseweed. The poppies are already popping and the brittlebush is in almost full bloom everywhere. When we did our Arizona Trail backpack on Passage 15 south of the Gila River over Thanksgiving, it looked more like a spring hike.

Cold here. Stupid cold up north. Add in the wind and you wonder how the homesteaders did it 200 years ago...and the native Americans did it 1000 years ago. Hell, that's camping.

Anyway, the trails look perfect, but thin under the trees. BTW, that video is a photo and looks great. We finally got 4" of snow, and it's weird because I"m still in the mindset of driving 3 hrs to get on natural snow. it's amazing what the local groomers can do with 4" of snow after years of a few inches here and there.

Today I started the car over my lunch break. Tomorrow I might have to start it twice.

Thanks, I fixed the video link above the pic.
Here it is again

Yeah, I think they do a pretty good job on the trails. They didn't groom this morning though. And so they were really fast for me.
Temp was 23F when I went out and 26F when I finished. No wind so it was really nice.
I managed to go 2+ hours about 11-12 kms around both courses without crashing :) 1 10 minute break midway for water and a bit of chocolate.
My eye is really black now from Sunday's crash.
https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-DfX ... 8JjG-S.jpg

I'm getting the hang of turning coming down hill. Got around all the down hill spots nicely.
Also better at what I call "semi-snowplowing" coming down hill to take off some speed and turn in the direction I need to go.
Loads of fun and really great for my fitness.
Resting BP's back down to 120's over 70's, occasionally lower afrer skiing. HR resting in lower 50's.
Blood sugar was 114 about 30 minutes after skiing which is about right after vigorous exercise.

You keep that bitter cold over there 8)Forecast for WF tomorrow is -2F warming to 20's during the day.
Polebridge is a little colder in the AM -7F. West Glacier 3F.

Downright "balmy" here this morning at 0730-- +14F 8)
I really feel for the Mid West folks.

People may wonder why Native America tribes like the Blackfeet, Sioux, Crow are tough folks.
Winters like the Mid West is seeing now might have something to do with it.
No "MediCare for ALL" back then.
"Survival of the fittest". The "weak" just didn't make it.
So over the millennia, only the very fittest and toughest survived.

We survived -30F last night but had to replace a heat tape in a cattle water fountain today (fingers get cold quickly). The forecast is for -35F tonight (southeastern Minnesota) and then a balmy - 4F on Thursday night.

The GPI airport is directly exposed to the wind coming out of Bad Rock Canyon.
And it be jumpin' ugly out there today!
Blowing here in WF too but not like out there; we're sheltered somewhat by the mountains.
I'm thinking it's a good day to stay inside and do domestic chores 8)

That said. I have to drive to Kalispell Monday AM for a lab appointment at the VA.
So I hope the wind dies down by morning.
Gotta leave by 0800 when it'll still be dark.
Fasting appointment too so I can't even take a cup of coffee with me!

Southeastern Minnesota is out of the deep freeze - in the upper 30s yesterday and today - then the dreaded "wintry mix" and then colder weather into the week.

Enjoy winter.

Oh I am enjoying winter in spite of these occasional cold spells :)
And as you see here, nothing stops my crow buddies from wanting their breakfast 8)

My sister still lives in Florida where we were born and raised.
