Pete,
I will be interested to see what you find.

The last photo is a reminder that I need to take a good look at some of the spruce trees around our property which my grandparents planted in the 1940s. I have had one blow down without damage (except to the tree) but the a few are closer to the house and may be getting a bit long in the tooth.

Hi Lyman:

I just got back here at 4:45 my time. I'll have some pics up shortly.
I spoke to Jason, the winter caretaker, and he said the wind was pretty bad.
He had 20-25 trees down around the lodge area that he could deal with by himself.
Jason has done some logging, however, there was one large tree that he said he'll need help with...and when I saw it, I thought , "No Duh" :)
I'll have pics of that one here within the hour....and the very close call Cobb House had.

I also talked with Ranger Brad(I think). He said the trees had taken out the power in several locations out there.
Flathead Electric Utility was working on that.
I saw a number of places along the road where trees had been cut back after falling on the road.

Here are the pics I took around Cobb House today. As you can see the tree narrowly missed smashing through the middle of the house.
A tree that large weighs in the tons for those who are familiar.
It appeared to me that damage will probably be minimal. The roof line and the the rock and timber porch supports all looked straight to my eye.
Nobody will know for sure until they get the tree out of there.

Jason figures that the momentum of the falling tree was broken somewhat by the trees it fell between, that and the top, which hit the porch roof, is the "lightest" part of the tree. I think he's right. However, he also acknowledged that because the tree is wedged tight where it lies, it will be tricky getting it out of there safely.

As a logger, he knows that the tree could be under a lot of "tension". Extreme care will be needed when they begin cutting it up. If that tension is suddenly released, the trunk, or part of it can spring like a mousetrap.

My guess is since they can drive right up to the tree, they'll get a logging skidder in there to hook up on the tree and take a strain on it. That should keep it from collapsing on the porch roof while they work on cutting it up.
I doubt they'll ask for my advice though 8)

Later and more pics over in Photos later

Pete,

Thanks for your report and photos. It does indeed look like the Cobb Cottage survived a close call!
