Fifty Mountain

The backcountry campground status for Fifty Mountain says it's closed. Does anyone know why?

I was talking to a ranger in the park on Tuesday. The information shared with me was that a grizzly bear took some food out of a tent at Fifty Mountain. No idea how long it will be closed. I have a reservation at FIF next week, but I don't mind it being closed if there is a grizzly in the neighborhood that now thinks a tent means food.

After all the warnings from BC Rangers and the BC video, how could someone leave food in their tent?

Yes that was very careless and dangerous. I don't understand how they would do that.

I like to see bears when I go to Glacier but not in my tent :)

There are always those who believe that rules are made for other people.

While I understand the safety issue that exists with a bear associating tents and food, I think it totally sucks that the bear is now going to have to pay the price for that hiker's carelessness.

Do you think they will relocate the bear? Or kill it?

Makes me very sad.

Remove is the polite word according to the ranger I spoke to.

We live in "the land of stupid". And of course, let's not forget "selfish". Totally disregarding everyone else's safety, along with the bears. And, disreagarding the fact that they now have destroyed many other's hiking and camping plans on top of everything else. Total as$%^les!!!!!!!!!

Please note: it has been said by the hikers, that there was no food in the tent. And that they don't understand why the bear ripped up the tent, sleeping bags, and pads.

Here is what really happened at fifty mountain a couple of weeks ago (this is on tripadvisor forum)

"did a backcountry trip 2-weeks ago and at fifty mountain we had a griz saunter by us at 35 yards while we were in the cooking area. He then circled up and ended up ripping open my tent and trying to take a sleeping pad and bag out. There was not food or personal items in the tent, just 3-bags and 3-pads. We reported him and the park shut dsown the campsite and sent a ranger. I just got a report that this bear had another incident yesterday and fifty mountain is closed again. Odds are not good for this bear, will likely be destroyed. Very sad."
