Driving the Alpine GTTS Road--Morning vs Afternoon

Postby PeteE » Sat Aug 19, 2017 7:37 am

I love driving up the "alpine" section of the GTTS road early in the morning.
There's virtually no traffic if one goes early enough--even on weekends.
However, driving back down the alpine section in the afternoon can be nerve wracking when East bound traffic coming up the hill is heavy.

Here are three video links of the alpine section.
The first one was made early in the morning on Sunday July 30th 2017.
Sorry about the dirty windshield. I hadn't planned on making this one.
I let the camera run continuously from just above The Loop until Logan Pass.

Runs 12:28 minutes.

Then yesterday, Friday August 18, I made these two video clips driving down the alpine section below Logan Pass to The Loop.
I shut the camera off while I waited briefly at the construction area.

Traffic was NOT very bad coming up to Logan Pass yesterday afternoon.
The worst time to drive down the West side is after about 7AM when everyone is trying to get to Logan Pass.
Then, the oncoming traffic can be downright scary when driving down the hill.

Part 1 is before the construction--no narration from me.
You'll get glimpses of the mountains showing that the smoke wasn't too bad on the West side in spite of the fires.
Runs 6:26 minutes

Part 2 is after the stop for construction and I do narrate it some. 8)
Runs 7:02 minutes

I agree. I had to head over mid-morning a few weeks ago to catch my flight back. It seems like no one heading up cared to stay in their lane. Definitely a little stressful from Logan to the Loop.
