July 22 2018 or July 23 2018

Postby Clairesey » Wed Jul 04, 2018 3:31 pm

I'd like to hike Piegan Pass in its entirety on July 22, 2018. We would be hiking from the Going to the Sun Road across to the Many Glacier Campground. We plan to leave our car at the St Mary Visitor Center on the 22nd in the AM. Hike down to the campground that late afternoon. Would anyone be able to give one of us a ride back to our car in the St Mary Visitor Center parking lot on the evening of the 22nd of July or on the morning of July 23rd? Thanks in advance.

Clairesey,

There is an easier way to tackle the logistics of this hike. Park your car in the Swiftcurrent lot, and take the Hiker's Shuttle to St. Mary. The first shuttle leaves at 7:30 followed by a 9:00. There is a fee. You can then simply take the free shuttle to the trailhead. You can then go at your own pace, and you don't need to worry about hitching back to St. Mary. Your car will be waiting.

That idea works well, but...
You now need reservations for the Xanterra shuttle from Swiftcurrent/Many Glacier to St Mary.
I would call and make a reservation the minute you read this 8)

Hey Pete,

I thought the same; however, per the Xanterra website, reservations are not required, and it is run on a first come basis. Since I didn't trust that the info was current, I called...twice. They confirmed the first come status. I wanted to confirm since I plan on using the same strategy for a 2 night stay at Granite Park. Since you are often in the Park, let us know if you have conflicting info, or have spoken to someone that has made reservations. Your current intel is always appreciated.

Hi Scott:

Thanks for that info on the shuttle. I wasn't aware of that change.
Great! :(
The last 2-3 years have been crazy busy. Sigh....
I guess I'll just hitch hike back to Logan like I did last year when I did that hike.

I haven't been able to get over there the last week or so.
Been really busy at work every day. Working tomorrow straight on through the weekend of the 15th too but...
I am going to sneak over to Logan Pass early Sunday morning to see how much snow remains on the route out to the Dragon's Tail.
Web cam pics aren't looking too favorable yet.
I'll see what I can find out, but I'm sure you're right.

Cheers and good luck everyone!

I have tried using that hiker's shuttle in the past. We tried to get on it at the swiftcurrent store but when it came (late) it already had people on it that had gotten on at the Many Glacier Hotel. Has that changed and would it be better to hike up to the hotel and get on there and be first? We were actually forced to hitch hike from the Gorge shuttle a couple of years ago because we had gone up and over Siyeh and then at Going to the Sun the shuttle never ever came. About 10 of us ended up hitch hiking up to Logan pass to get our cars. I didn't tell my 90 year old mom about that. I could hear her lecture already. :)

I didn't get to Many Glacier to ask where it started from.
I think it is correct though that the shuttles start their run from the Many Glacier Hotel.
Did in the past cause I was first in line one year when I did the Piegan Pass hike.
I hiked to the Hotel--near the end, the trail was a trench of "horse apples and mud" since it had rained.
Probably shouldn't tell your mom about that either 8)

Do you remember what year and time of day it was that the shuttle never arrived?
During 2015 fire things were crazy. Was it then?
The East side shuttle are generally run much better than West Side---again imo.

When I took the hiker shuttle in 2015 and 2017, the first pickup was at Swiftcurrent Motor Inn. I have no idea if that's always the case, or what's happening this year. Both years they required advance reservations (which I liked, because I knew I had a ride).

I think it was 2016 that that happened when the shuttle never arrived. It was around 5 or 6. I don't know maybe around 4. I can't exactly remember. We had hiked the whole Siyeh trail and were pretty beat and really not happy about it. It didn't have anything to do with the fires.

I'm going to call anyway and see if I can get a reservation at Swift Current. If they give me one I'll let you know. Still trying to get a ride tho.

Plan accordingly
To travel the entire length of the Going-To-The-Sun-Road from the Apgar Visitor Center to St. Mary Visitor Center and back, or vice versa, is approximately 7 hours. The last service to Logan Pass, with time to visit and return, departs the Apgar Visitor Center at 4:15 pm and the St. Mary Visitor Center at 4:50 pm. The 5:45 pm shuttle departing the St. Mary Visitor Center is the last service to Logan Pass.

Yeah last year I checked with the Shuttle service at Swiftcurrent they were full up with reservations. BUT, it did start there as I recall, and not the hotel.
Let us know what you find out about reservations.

If no reservations possible, consider taking the first shuttle from Swiftcurrent(if it does indeed begin the route there) to St Mary and then park shuttle to Siyeh Bend to begin. Hike back to the CG. Plenty of daylight to do that, even for me, a relatively slow hiker.

Thanks Pete. That is what we'll try to do. They wouldn't do any reservations when I called. Nate at Xanterra says no reservations possible and get there first come first serve. So if we don't get on we'll hitch hike. The shuttle is $10 per person.

Hopefully Pete and others can tell you what the water situation is on the Piegan Pass trail when you will be there. I hiked it years ago and after we came down from the Pass and headed toward Many Glacier it was hot and dusty and didn't have much water as I recall. I think that was in August. I recommend that you carry plenty of water unless someone has current advice to the contrary.
Hope you have a great hike and will post a report.
