Re: April 8, 2024 Total Solar Eclipse

Totality cuts across a slice of Western New York. I'll be watching the eclipse from my back yard.

Re: Wilderness Permits 2023

How rough is it on the Fielding Trail (Park to Coal) - seems like that would be pretty low on the list for maintenance? I met some guys two years ago that did BEA->MOR and were pretty beat upon arrival, saying Cutbank Pass was difficult to find the trail (September as well) - also low on the mainte...

Re: A Whole Summer in Glacier - 2022

I’ve never been there, but from Google Earth this looks like a trail to Silver Dollar Beach. I hiked the "Many Falls Trail" fourteen years ago and the trail goes right above Silver Dollar Beach. I did not go down to the beach but I got a good view. There was a pile of weathered lumber sta...

I'll be there in early August. Planning to spend day 2 hiking in the Hudson Bay Creek Valley. Open to suggestions!
Are you going to day-hike from REF to Triple Divide Pass on Day 2? That is a pleasant approach to access the Pass.

Re: Ole Creek - new trail

Since we have gotten into the Boulder Creek Trail question, I will offer this old post as my contribution. Perhaps others have actually completed this quest successfully. Still, it was an interesting several days.

Re: Ole Creek - new trail

Interesting. Any recommendations on where to learn more about historic trails? I have seen some references from the trail status pages about trails NW from Kintla and N from Belly River, but nothing too exciting. I think the longest trail that was abandoned was the West Lakes Trail. That trail coul...

Re: Hwy 2 Camping

Devil Creek, USFS, is one that I have used over the years. About 16-18 sites. Some are built to accomodate travel campers. Some sites on the west side of the campground back up to Devil Creek itself. I have never had a problem with finding a site on a walk-in basis, but that was BC (before Chaos). S...

Re: 2021 Backcountry Permit Applications: Date for submittal now March 17

On another related topic... Does anyone here know if a Backcountry Office would issue a permit like the following: Sept 1 - Cracker Lake Sept 2 - Cracker Lake Sept 3 - Poia Lake Sept 4 - Poia Lake So... spend a couple of nights at Cracker Lake; hike out on Sept 3 and drive down the road to the Poia...

Re: BC Campgrounds - The Best of the Rest?

My questions and alternatives are: Recommendation on Red Eagle Foot or Head? Recommendation on Atlantic Creek or Morning Star Lake? Recommendation on No Name or Upper Two Medicine? Cobalt would be nice, but even going COB-MOR-REF would break me (and over 17 miles so only a walkin modification at th...

Re: 2020 "Snaps" Around Glacier National Park

Pete Is that the old Alder Trail? If so, it was once a maintained trail from the Sun Road to Granite Park...shorter than the trail up from the Loop, but steeper. It was abandoned, officially, years ago because it was heavily inhabited by grizzlies. Years ago, on the Highline Trail, I think I spotted...

Re: Elk Mountain Trail

Pete, that's an accomplishment! I think that Elk Mountain is harder than the trail to Brown Mountain Lookout. The Brown Mountain trail at least gives you a number of timely switchbacks to moderate the climb; not so with Elk Mountain. And I think you already knew it was going to be dry. Well done.

Re: Latest 2020 Season Opening News

Personally I'm trying to channel my frustration into resolve to make it work, even if that means the long approach into Two Medicine from Park Creek. If you actually get the chance to do it, you will find the route into Two Medicine via Park Creek to be very decent. There is the opportunity to visi...

Re: camping....around labor day....with a toddler?

My limited, and frustrating, experience with Reservation dot gov recalls that they block you from making reservations more than six months in advance. At least that applies to the National Forest campgrounds. Could that be what the problem is?

Re: Changing permit

If things look tight for catching your shuttle, you can just leave the line at St. Mary and catch the shuttle. There is a Backcountry Desk at the Many Glacier Ranger Station that can handle your permit.

Re: 7/20 to 7/24 Permit Options

My thoughts are below: Also, not sure the hike up to Janet is worth it (with a backpack). Stay at the Waterton River site, and then dayhike to Janet or even better, to Lake Isabel. . Lake Isabel is in the Park Creek drainage area on the western side of Two Medicine pass. You may be thinking of Lake...
