St. Mary/Babb lodging week after Labor Day?

Yeah, read this and laugh. I'm going through Glacier withdrawal not having been there since 2014. But I've got some time in early September this year before I start cancer treatment and would like to boost my spirits with a stay in the St. Mary/Babb area with my traveling buddy and faithful dog Skye...

Re: Sperry Photos

Viewer discretion is advised when viewing these photos if you love this place as much as I do. While viewing these photos it is easy to miss the link to the page where you can donate to a Sperry rebuilding fund. Here is the link: https://glacier.org/support-sperry-chalet/ Donators have contributed m...

Re: Research on Logan Pass goats

In the Olympic National Park in my back yard the situation with mountain goats has gotten to the state where park officials are considering "removing" them. In 2010 a hiker was attacked and killed by a mountain goat in the park. I hope the situation does not reach this state in Glacier. ht...

Northern Lights Saloon these days?

A search didn't turn up much on the Northern Lights Saloon. A friend is visiting Glacier in August and wondered what was going on at the Northern Lights these days. I remember the days when the Kauffman's (former owners of the Merc) daughter ran the place and it was outstanding. Then she sold it and...

Re: North Cascades Washington

I live in the North Cascades area, Snohomish, WA, and can attest to great hiking around here. I would be happy to tell you more if you want to PM or email me. And yes there is a very good chat group for hiking in the area: http://www.nwhikers.net . As with any online group you have to read the list ...

Glacier Park's Night of the Grizzlies

A couple of weeks ago I came across Glacier Park's Night of the Grizzlies in the middle of the program on my local PBS station. I was engrossed by the last part of the 2010 documentary and ordered the DVD of the program from the Montana PBS online shop. On one night during the summer of 1967 two wom...

Re: Just in case you are wondering...

The Glacier Conservancy responded to my inquiry about the tree planting with this: I have been in contact with the Anderson family (aka 'Hockey Ref" from the Chat Group). They unfortunately are unable to make it to the park this summer and have requested that the park proceed with the planting ...

Re: Arts UNPLUG

Thanks to all who posted and wished well of my health. I just spent 45 minutes or so composing a thoughtful reply to comments that were made and it disappeared into the ether for some reason. I will not attempt to recreate it at this time but offer a summary of what I said. In my experience the arti...

Re: Arts UNPLUG

Hi Jay, Unfortunately I hate to reply to your question in the way in which I will. My residency in the summer of 2005 was the last of the best. I was given a cabin on Lake McDonald for a month during July and August and told that my task was to go "do art." It was a wonderful month of hiki...

Arts UNPLUG

Due to my age, health issues, and business decline I am quitting my art biz at the end of this year. I am 72, last December I was smacked with congestive heart failure, and when Glacier Park, Inc. lost its in-park concession I lost 75 percent of my art income. I want to take this opportunity to than...

What the folks in my neighborhood are saying about this, if you are interested:

We North Cascadians tend to get testy when someone starts to mess with the wilderness.

NOT the way to do "art" in the parks

This popped up on a local hikers chat group. Let's hope misguided persons like this don't visit Glacier.

Re: Glacier Park maps

You can enter waypoints manually by choosing where on the map you want one and then clicking there (with the waypoint tool selected). Or you can download a track from a GPS that has waypoints on it and the waypoints will be entered on the map along with the path (trail) that the GPS recorded on the ...

Glacier Park maps

In the 2015 Trip Dates section there is a post by askus3 regarding his 2015 trip. One of the issues that he brings up regards maps that don't show enough detail. The USGS map of the park does not allow enlarging to show sufficient detail. Jake Bramante's Day Hikes of Glacier National Park is a good ...
