Re: TR: Day Hiking Big Bend NP, March 2024

Thank you for such a detailed account and many captivating photos.
I was especially drawn by the rock formations, canyon views from bottom, and early and late day views.
Glad you were able to find times and trails that provided a bit of solitude, away from the masses.

Re: Annual Birkie Thread

We need a new category for this level of fun - type 3?
Jay, I'm glad you were able to participate in an "event" and redeem the day.
A balmy winter for sure, down here on Lake Michigan.

Re: Jan 2024 Winter sledding trip to Two Medicine

Indeed -- wow! It's always a treat to see quiet Glacier in the winter. Thanks for posting an account of your visit, complete with calendar pictures. I especially enjoyed Running Eagle Falls. It sounds like quite the adventure. Was Pray Lake open but Two Medicine mostly not? I hope you'll want...

Re: 2024 Backcountry Permits: BIG Changes!

As I read it, "subgroups" are assigned a date and time period (unknown how long) to make a reservation, if chosen in the digital lottery for early access. So one is still competing, but perhaps at a moderated rate. Yellowstone, where I am more familiar with the routine, has a leisurely 3 w...

So many out-of-the-way hikes hiding in plain sight! I had no idea ...
The photo of the Oxbow itself is breathtaking.

Re: Flathead Beacon "Deep Winter" Photos

Thanks for this. A reminder of how different the landscape can look when bedecked in ice and snow. I had to look up some of the places - Bad Rock Canyon I had not heard so named. The view of Mt Edwards was nice. Perhaps when it warms up a tad to make XC skiing enjoyable an intrepid soul might ski in...

Re: TR: Summer in Grand Teton National Park, 2023

al_in_al Thanks very much for this captivating photo diary. It opens so much to explore next time I am in the vicinity. Am not sure I knew about Moose Ponds trail, but that is definitely on the list now. The egg-shaped rock on the beach (Colter Bay?) is striking. As, indeed, are so many of the vist...

al_in_al,
These photo journeys are lovely and evocative. They soar above anything I've seen on the trails and the area.
just epic in totality.

Re: Good year for Feb, March Phantom Ranch reservations

Phantom Ranch sounds excellent, particularly at that time of year. I last stayed at Phantom Ranch in ?2011, when it was easy to stand in line at the Transportation Desk in Bright Angel Lodge and pick up cancellations. I believe that may now be a historical experience. Late March was the sweet spot ...

Re: TR: Summer in Grand Teton National Park, 2023

al_in_al,
Thanks for these great photos. I gather the flowers were from the July hikes?
The fox photo has special charm - "I am fox, and that field mouse was delicious."

Bear too, as tibber says: looks like a bit of surprise for both!

Good year for Feb, March Phantom Ranch reservations

Cabin res Feb, March 2024 No dormitories available, but cabin (get together with some friends) inventory will be released on Feb 1, 2024, for February, and on March 1, 2024, for March. This is the only exception I've seen to the lottery system and 12-months-in-advance try. Also of significance: Bri...

Re: TR: Summer in Grand Teton National Park, 2023

Scrumptious!
Looking forward to more goodness. On my 3 (so far) visits to Yellowstone, I visited Grand Teton NP but didn't do much.
(I surprised myself by liking Yellowstone, and if I lived closer, I would visit more often.)

Colter Bay comment period ends Thursday, 1-11-24

Colter Bay, Grand Tetons, Legacy Planning During the last 60-70 years few improvements have occurred and Colter Bay is increasingly unable to accommodate growing and diverse visitation, changing environmental conditions, and staffing required to maintain and operate this area of the park. Increasin...
