Washington Post Grizzly Article

Interesting article in the Washington Post about the 1967 bear incidents and how they changed the way bears are managed in the parks. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/animalia/wp/2017/08/03/the-true-story-of-two-fatal-grizzly-bear-attacks-that-changed-our-relationship-with-wildlife/?utm_term=.44c...

Re: OK to leave car at Chief Mountain Customs?

I always try to leave my car at the end point of our hike whenever possible, one less thing to worry about after a long trek in the backcountry.... A few years ago my wife and I left our car at Chief Mountain, went through customs, and walked across the border where we had and arranged for a shuttle...

This is a great article that summarizes the kind of disrespectful, ignorant (insert several expletive's) these guys really are...

Re: Yellowstone Petting Zoo

Man, this is becoming a daily occurrence... My Google News feed keeps alerting me to these stories (since I keep opening them). I think the water is around 160 degrees, somehow they avoided the soothing 3rd degree burns... http://yellowstoneinsider.com/2016/05/16/men-photographed-taped-walking-on-gr...

Re: Yellowstone Petting Zoo

Update to the story, they had to euthanize the bison... http://www.eastidahonews.com/2016/05/park-service-bison-calf-dead-after-tourists-put-it-in-vehicle/ Unfortunately the tourists are still at large. Be on the look out for a Toyota Sequoia. It is more than likely stopped in the middle of the road...

Yellowstone Petting Zoo

I do not understand how people can be so stupid.
If you are dumb enough to pet a wild bison, how have you managed to survive this long?

Re: August Trip planning

I have gotten numerous walk-in permits for trips that have been "book-ended" with hotel reservations. All of those trips were in August, and all of them worked out for me. You can almost always get a decent walk-in permit if you are flexible and accept the fact that your itinerary may not ...

Re: Relocating Bull Trout from Logging to Grace Lake

I read a few articles different about the Lake Trout suppression efforts in Quartz Lake and Logging Lake as well. It sounds like the efforts in Quartz Lake are working well. Here is a more recent one: http://m.flatheadnewsgroup.com/hungryhorsenews/park-biologists-say-they-re-winning-the-lake-trout-w...

Bear injures wisconsin hiker near Many Glacier

Sounds like the hiker is going to be fine, since they drove themselves to the hospital... http://m.channel3000.com/news/bear-injures-wisconsin-hiker-in-glacier-national-park/35585516 Not to speculate too much, but on my recent 6 day trek I encountered a number of very quiet solo hikers in the back c...

9/14 to 9/19: ELF-GLH-STO-FIF-GRN

This was the 5th backcountry trip to GNP for me and my wife. Prior to this year every trip had always been in early to mid August. I had always wanted to go in September, but work always got in the way. When my wife and I first went to Glacier over 15 years ago (before we were married), she was work...

Re: Ptarmigan tunnel closing

I hiked through the tunnel monday 9/14, there was really no snow to speak of on the trail other than a couple of tiny drifts on the Elizabeth lake side. I also went through Stoney up along the highline and back down through Swiftcurrent and all were snow free (I hiked out today). Of course that coul...
