Re: Hikes For Your Best Friend's 1st Visit

Siyeh loop, Highline (to Swiftcurrent if they can handle it and arrange transportation), Pitamakan-Dawson if they can handle it, Grinnell Glacier, Iceberg - that was enough to get me hooked!

Partner for Shangri-La next week (Aug. 23 or 24)

I'll be in the park next week for my 3rd visit and would like to hike the Shangri-La approach to Iceberg. I've read all of the reports and studied the pictures, but never having done it before, I'm still hesitant to go off-trail alone due to route-finding and the climb through the cliffs. Is there a...

Where to buy bear spray between Calgary and St. Mary's?

On previous trips to GNP I've flown into Kalispell and picked up my bear spray at the rafting place on the side of the road on the way into the park, which was always cheaper than other places. For my upcoming trip it looks like I'll be coming down from Calgary to the east side of the park. Any reco...

Microwave for public use?

Wasn't sure where to post this, but due to dietary issues, I bring a lot of my food with me when I travel. On my past 2 trips to GNP I've been able to warm up food in the microwave at Heidi's, but I understand that it's closed this summer due to the renovations. On this trip I'll be splitting my tim...

This year's weather / snow levels

I didn't think I'd have a chance to make it back to GNP this summer. Now there's a possibility that I could, but it would most likely have to be early-mid July. My previous 2 trips (2010 and 2012) were during the 2nd and 3rd weeks in July, respectively. While I had an amazing time (obviously), it wa...

Re: happy to have found this board

Wow, what an amazing view Jen! What summit is that taken from, and how hard is it to get up there?

Re: Glacier-related books

I came across a book on Amazon called Living Across The River From Glacier National Park.: A North Fork Love Story. A Man. His Cabin. The Views by Joe Novak. It looks like it's right up my alley, but I'd prefer to hear from other chatters who may have read it before ordering. Any reviews?

Re: Slow season of fun

Oldman - nice to finally recognize one from my limited day hiking in the park, and what a way that was to spend my birthday this summer!

Re: Siyeh partial hike worth it?

Hi Pete, Thanks for the updated info. I was thinking of doing the hike next Thursday. You think it will be safe to complete the loop down to Sunrift by then?

Re: Highline trail update???

Thanks Pete for trying. I also heard that the area around Haystack is a big concern at this point. Unfortunately, as you said, even though safety clearly comes first, it seems like in this case somebody way overreacted. I could understand the need for additional safety precautions, but shutting down...

Re: Siyeh partial hike worth it?

The following was added to the Siyeh Pass trail status on the park web page today: Siyeh Pass to Sun Road at Sun Rift Gorge/ 5.6 mi. Trail is clear of snow to the bottom of the switchbacks ascending to the pass. From this point on there are numerous snowfields to cross, eventually becoming 100% snow...

Siyeh partial hike worth it?

Two different park employees have told me that it's possible to get up to Siyeh Pass, but that it's impossible to get down to Sunrift Gorge due to massive ice/snowfields in the Baring Basin. Is it worth it to do this hike up to the pass and then retracing my steps down, or is the scenery on the hike...

Re: Highline trail update???

Thanks for the info. I spoke to a backcountry ranger at Many Glacier, who said that people have been able to get up and down Swiftcurrent without significant difficulty, and the remaining snow is not a major impediment. Any other advice would still be appreciated. Word from the St. Mary Visitor Stat...
