Re: The Thunderbird Traverse to Jefferson Pass & Gyrfalcon L

Here is a pretty awesome look at one of the more remote places in the Glacier backcountry. We hike up to Brown Pass, then climb up onto the slopes of Thunderbird Mountain. We use goat trails to traverse around both Thunderbird and the Guardhouse to reach Jefferson Pass. From there we head south alo...

Re: Sperry Chalet via Floral Park (8/31/14)

Rain, clouds, bullet ice, and looking for an exit beyond the glacier all sound familiar, but I wasn't able to find that exit. Thanks everyone. Jay, if you look at sat photos of the basin the westernmost lake, long and skinny, will stand out. A hiker will be on the eastern side. Go past the lake, cr...

Sperry Chalet via Floral Park (8/31/14)

My parents came out to visit. They had managed to snag one night at Sperry via a cancellation. My mom and I hiked in via Floral Park, while my wife and stepdad went up the usual way. It snowed a bit at Comeau Pass. The whole thing was awesome. Photos: http://bedrockandparadox.com/2014/09/03/circles/...

BC conditions report (6/30/14)

This past weekend I hiked from the Loop over Flattop, down into Waterton, up over Stoney Indian, through the Mokowanis valley, over Redgap Pass, down to Poia Lake, and into Many Glacier. The curious spring weather has resulted in little snow below 6000 feet, but a lot above it. The Flattop trail is ...

Re: 2014 Permits

It's been said before, but you know ... if you guys just moved to Montana it would take a lot of the stress out of your Glacier trip planning. :D True that. But Virginia has the advantage of being done with snow by, say, the middle of March... Jus' sayin'. :P I went skiing on Saturday, then mountai...

Re: So how's this comparing to 2011?

Could be. Still too early to know what May will be like. I was a meeting where a Forest Service District Ranger presented the latest snow depth data for the upper Sun River Drainage. He said the snow is about 130% of the ten year average. The current ten year average includes 2003-2013. He also not...

Re: Jackson Glacier Spur Hike

It's a great little trail, and for a short while one of the steepest in the park. If you continue at the same elevation after the trail disappears you'll get to the lateral moraine above the creek, which has a great view over the whole basin. The challenge will be finding the trail on the way back. ...

Re: North Loop hike with kid

Excellent route with primo campsites. Should be reasonable if your daughter is invested.

In August, that route is a big ask, as mentioned above. Being as flexible as possible with start dates will help a lot. Good luck.

Re: Trails less traveled?

We've been going to Glacier nearly every year since 2000 and have noticed that as the years pass the Park gets busier. The secret is out...Glacier is a great place! My question is are there some trails that are less traveled? Last year we went to Cut Bank and were pleasantly surprised by how quiet ...

Re: June out and backs

I think the Park Service gets the Lincoln Creek trail bridge installed fairly early in the season, generally in May. I like the boundary trail -- it's pretty underrated -- and Harrison Lake is nice, but it would be a fairly long haul. Mark Duh, there is a bridge at the lower Lincoln crossing. I've ...

Re: So how's this comparing to 2011?

I saw that a neighborhood on the outside of Missoula was hit by an avalanche the other day. My friends son was the young boy who was buried for almost an hour. He was out in the front yard with his sister (who was partially buried). My friend was out with his shovel and probe within a minute and it...

Re: Off-trail hikes

This thread has totally put Norris traverse on my radar/to-do list! It is firmly in my top-five of all time list, right along with the Hayes Range in Alaska and the traverse along the top of the Chinese Wall in the Bob. To elaborate further, and make sure my previous posts are better put in context...

There's a stream ~200 yards back towards Bowman which runs all summer.
