Re: High line and iceberg closures

Just saw this in my Facebook feed. Heading into the busiest week of the year (free admission to celebrate the centennial), lots of the majors are closed due to hungry bears. http://missoulian.com/news/state-and-regional/grizzlies-scramble-glacier-centennial-plans/article_ccf0d17c-8701-5c9b-863f-8d07...

Re: Trip of a lifetime- UPK/BOU/HOL/BOU/UPK

I may have missed it but what dates did you go? I'm thinking I should plan for doing this later in July or early August to avoid crossing snowfields. Aug 4-11. Sunday the 7th required traction. Monday the 8th did not. On the 8th, you could actually start to see the trail sticking out of the biggest...

Re: Trip of a lifetime- UPK/BOU/HOL/BOU/UPK

Three years ago, I did that hike right after the birth of our third grandchild (her birthday is today). The story is here: http://www.glacier.nationalparkschat.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=8008 Jay Thanks Jay. I read your report over breakfast this morning. I don't recommend trying to eat wh...

Re: Trip of a lifetime- UPK/BOU/HOL/BOU/UPK

I did not plan on bringing traction equipment for this route in late August. Do I need to? The snow crossings were just about bridged when we went. My guess is that the trail appeared a day or so after we were there. It did snow on us, though... so keep an eye on the weather. If it stays warm, I wo...

Trip of a lifetime- UPK/BOU/HOL/BOU/UPK

Hi folks, I want to start by thanking everyone who helped me plan my recent trip to Glacier. This board is the BEST resource for trip planning - you guys are awesome! One thing I did find lacking was recent trip reports - here's my contribution. (BTW, if you have problems seeing the pics, let me kno...

Re: Glacier Crowds

Glacier overcrowding? Visit the North Fork. We enjoyed UPK and BOU all alone. Empty sites? The hail and snow must've scared people away. You'd never know Glacier was experiencing record visitors up north. People were scarce.

Gas stove question

Just curious what the permit means by "No Fires" at certain campspots.
Surely cooking a hot meal on a little gas backpacking burner while at HOL is OK... right?

Thanks.

Re: Spring and Summer 2016 Around GNP

I find all the talk about hanging bear bags amusing. In the northeast, our bears have long learned how to get a bear bag down. The USFS now requires the use of a bear canister in the Whites and Adirondack, and only certain types because the bears have already figured out how to open the twist/lock o...

Ruhle's Guide to Glacier - Thanks Ear Mountain!

Thanks Ear Mountain for recommending Ruhle's Guide to Glacier. I found a 1957 edition on-line for $5 (one antique book dealer in my area had it for $60...) I was amazed that in a 70 year old book, there is talk about climate change and how quickly the glaciers are retreating. Some of the pictures in...

Snowfields, etc.

Hi all, I've been following the Glacier trail statuses. Looks like they were planning to clear HOL to BOU by today, but I haven't seen any updates. My biggest area of concern is the snowfield between those two campsites. I'm planning to bring my ice axe and crampons, but my hiking partner thinks I m...

Re: What's New to Eat?

I got hooked on Good-To-Go last year.
Because they're based in Maine, all of the backpacker stores in my area carry it.

Their Thai Curry is phenomenal.
And their "2 servings" really is 2 servings

Wow. You guys are great. Thanks for the super advice!
I'm looking at AirBnB in the area, so this definitely gels with my agenda.

Cheers,
Jamie

After the hike... what to do?

Hi all, Later this summer, I'm spending 8 days in the North Fork. I exit the woods on Thursday, and fly home Saturday... which means I have one day to do whatever I want. For most folks, this would be a no-brainer: GTTS road, or some low-mile high-reward day-hikes. But after spending days in the Nor...

Re: Record Wind at Logan Pass

Just curious, is it typically windy up in the passes?
In New England, most any trip above treeline gets you 20 mph winds, and Mt Washington (6200 ft) gets you 40-100 most days.
Should I expect the same at Glacier in August, specifically in the North Fork?

Thanks
