Re: 2024 Lottery Results

I haven’t followed the permit process. Is it essentially 100% reservable now? I would think that would put a crimp on the through hikers that didn’t get a permit (or one that fits their goals).

Re: Heat, Smoke and Finally Relief

Bill, 94F is about 20 degrees past too warm for me. Glad you got a couple days in cooler weather even if it was smokey. Basically everything you did on the west side is new to me. I too like that "dead tree" even though I've only seen it once. Amazing low water. Thanks for the report. Jay

Re: Annual Birkie Thread

We had 2-3 weeks of winter this year and it didn't snow, with one exception. I'll see if I can recall this winter correctly...it snowed a couple inches on Halloween, and then didn't snow more than an inch at a time until the beginning of Feb. So our snowfall total for the winter was 7 inches until w...

Thanks for more trail reports. I guess you've lined things up pretty well when you get to spend a summer in the Tetons. Well done.

Re: Backpacking between Granite Park Chalet and Sperry Chalet

The Floral Park route The hike up to the ridge between Hidden Lake and Floral Park (Mary Baker) is quite steep. Of course I could be remembering it wrong, but it was hard packed with some gravel on top and I was on the edge of retaining grip (hands and feet climbing). It was steep enough that I look...

Enjoying this, but I should get out a map to follow along in the perish hymnal. I'll tuck the memory of this post away for the next time out to Teton NP.

Re: Glacier 2023: One of the fortunate few, Pt 1

Thanks Zep. I'm pretty sure I ended up with "0 sheets remaining." Gear, sigh. I'm kind of disappointed with Canon. In the film days I shot Nikon. In digital, I started with the 5DII and now have the 5Div. I really like the 16-35 F4 and the 5Div, but the combo is pretty big and heavy. For d...

Re: Glacier 2023: One of the fortunate few, Pt 1

Thanks Ralph. it's hard for me to avoid a dead tree. There were a couple shots from Sun Rift....Baring Falls and one shot two above it that I particularly like. If would be fun to see some printed. Jen, it was a great group. Thank the leader, right? I didn't really realize the group's experience unt...

Ok, part II is up. Remember that you can click on a photo if you want to see it a bit larger. Here's what an "AI check" says about the post. The content illustrates a detailed account of a backpacking trip experience, filled with personal reflections and observations. The narrative style i...

Re: Good year for Feb, March Phantom Ranch reservations

The one time I was out there (March or April I believe), I ran sections of the Kaibab trail on the way to Phantom ranch. This got the guys I passed all fired up, so then there were four guys running down the trail. On the way up the Bright Angel, a guy that sounded like he was from Austria was tryin...

Jan 15th (roughly)

Some serious cold went through northern MT recently. I'm seeing a number of -40F temps 1/12 - 1/15. I think of that, 20-30 mph winds, and teepees and wonder how they did it years ago.

So Miss Ipasha, is this the end, or do you have photos from the hike out?

Re: Six days on the east side.

Usually I'm a "no insect repellent" kind of guy, but the mosquitos at Liz Head bothered me enough that I kept moving rather than dig through the pack.

Can't believe that ranger....
