Re: 2021 Random photos

That's good info Paul. I think I get the picture. The goat trail leads you to a point below the pass and you have to climb up to the pass. It sounds like normally you'd go up the snow/glacier, but (from Tina's post and confirmed by you) climbing that is not the easiest thing to do. My guess is that ...

Re: 2021 Random photos

Hey thanks Tina. It's good to know I couldn't hike down to Helen. It looks so doable. Also, I number of years ago, I remember hearing about a hiker falling by trying to pick up the goat path from Ahern to Ptarmegan. So I half heartedly looked for a trail that might be the offender. https://missoulia...

Re: 2021 Random photos

Thanks Pete. Yeah, my Garmin recorded 5700 feet of vertical. Even on a bike, that's a pretty good day. I have a shot of the scree field from my lunch spot at Ahern Pass, but it doesn't show the boulders or give a sense of how far up it is to the notch. (Left top center.) There's a goat trail on the ...

Re: Close Encounters of the Wildlife Kind

Thanks Paul and ND. I was nervous about the length of the hike to the notch. It's been quite a while since I've done a 25 mile hike, and the last one was from Bowman Lake hiking almost to Brown Pass. It killed me, and I was surprised my feet hurt. So I was quite happy the body cooperated this time. ...

Re: Close Encounters of the Wildlife Kind

Thanks Selkie. I'd like to know if the elevators were/are owned locally or by the railroads. I've heard that the railroads jacked shipping prices at harvest time, and the elevators are near the tracks, so it would make sense that the railroads built them. That would also provide some background on w...

Close Encounters of the Wildlife Kind

I waited a bit to post this, so as not to step on Tibber's trip. I swear the photo's lack a little contrast when posted on Wordpress, but it doesn't make sense that would be true. Anyway, lots of moose this year. https://tworightshoes.wordpress.com/2021/10/24/have-trailer-will-travel-glacier-2021/ Jay

Re: 2021 Random photos

Thanks Angela and Paul. Yeah, that's the Notch. I was going to make a joke about how I sat in a lawn chair and flew a drone up there, but that might not be funny to too many people. I took the non-climbing route of the Highline Trail. It's long, it's tedious, it can be a bit dangerous, but I wanted ...

I never knew that lake was Prayer Lake. The water (on the video) looks clear and cold.

It must have been quite a storm. Much better to be inside when the sleet is coming down sideways.

The rare trip report. Excellent. It's been years since I've been on the "Ranger Cabin hike" and quite a while since Deadwood Falls (a favorite).

Thanks for posting.

Re: 2020 "Snaps" Around Glacier National Park

Pete, always interesting stuff. The clouds in the Goose Island one are great. Wedding pics at sunrise, eh? Let’s just say that I found out a tool for colon surgery has a 40mm diameter. Imagine that. General anesthesia is a good thing. For the next procedure, I’ve attached a seatbelt to the loo. I ha...

Re: Ole Creek - new trail

This is a good subject. The Boulder Creek drainage…..I’m wondering if there is a path across the dam. I assume it’s fenced off (at least that’s the picture I have in my head). So starting at the northern end(s) might be challenging. Ahean Pass…I have also looked at Helen Lake and thought it doable t...

Re: Virginia hiker not heard from in nearly a week found dead in Glacier National Park

There was a helicopter over me as I was hiking the Highline Trail north of Granite Park on Sep 2nd. It was low (just above the peaks or lower), so it appeared to be a search helicopter, but at the time, I didn't know the story. The 7th (as I recall) was a fairly calm day, and (from MG campground) I ...
