Re: First Trip and Report

especially going up what we now call the huckleberry switchbacks (FYI, there are eleven switchbacks between Thunberbird Pond and Browns Pass). Wow, that is a lot of switchbacks! I remember seeing GNP switchbacks as being "honest" meaning only there when you need, which I found to be the c...

First Trip and Report

We managed our first trip to Glacier last week and it was a great experience! I wanted to pass along a trip report. A few general observations: It was very dry; lots of creeks and waterfalls were not flowing. We never had trouble getting water, although at Brown Pass it was just one puddle. Positive...

Mosquitos

I am going to be at Brown Mountain Pass campsite in the middle of August, and possibly Kootenai as well. They both have a reputation for mosquitos. Should we be thinking of bringing headnets and other mosquito gear, or just good repellent? I realize there are a lot of variables involved, but some ty...

Re: Gassing up

Thanks for the info! You have to love a place where they sell bear spray at a gas station!

Gassing up

I will be in flying to get to Glacier, and I am wondering how easy it is to get fuel once we land. Is Whitefish fairly well equipped with stores that sell fuel? We will be bringing stoves in our checked luggage. Bear spray is another purchase we will be looking for. I assume these items are not sold...

Re: So what new piece of gear have you purchased lately?

I have had a few upgrades over the past year. Or at least some additions. Toaks alcohol stove, which works well, is very simple with no moving parks, and makes it easy to save unused fuel. And it has a pretty ingenious design. Since my previous tarp started leaking--it was a an inexpensive model and...

Re: Route Question

Shuttle-wise, our spouses are going to be spending those days in a lodge, so we have that covered!

Re: Route Question

Well, that sounds like an opportunity for a "Plan B". I will make sure to check the weather forecast and conditions. I am not looking for sketchy, particularly.

Re: Route Question

Thanks! The last multi-day hike I did was on the John Muir Trail in CA, and we averaged about 11 miles a day. From the pics I have seen, those trails look roughly comparable, fwiw. I will add Francis Lake to the itinerary, that looks like a great campsite on a long day.

Route Question

Not having been to GNP before I wanted to check on this itinerary for two fit 50 year olds; I am planning on this hike the week or two after Labor Day. Any advice appreciated. I like the idea of doing the Northern Traverse, and really want to spend nights at Kootenai (for Moose spotting purposes) an...
