Re: Backpacking between Granite Park Chalet and Sperry Chalet

Congrats on nabbing those nights at Granite and Sperry Chalets! In planning some of those more creative itineraries to get from one chalet to the other, keep in mind (and double check with the backcountry permit office on this) there may be restrictions on piecing together trail segments that come o...

Re: BackCountry Permits 2022

I just got my permit (UPT, NON, OLD) starting 9/5. This was my second choice itinerary, as I had wanted to start in COB. Not complaining! Hopefully will be able to do the Dawson-Pit segment this year - tried last year and we bailed from NON due to heavy wind and rain. Good luck everyone.

Books and such

Hi All - I've recently been enjoying several books and other works (fiction and non-fiction) set in and around GNP. It would be great to hear about others you may know about. The ones I have read recently are several by Christine Carbo and several by John Fraley, all of which can be found through yo...

Re: 2021 Backcountry Permit Applications: Date for submittal now March 17

I was concerned i had no received any word from NPS re. my permit application by mid-May, so i sent an email to the BC office. They informed me the itinerary approval had been sent to me gmail account a month earlier. Upon investigating, i found it was not in my spam folder, but it was in my Trash f...

Re: 2021 Backcountry Permit Applications: Date for submittal now March 17

Hey CDSmith - that's a great itinerary (Park to Sperry). I did a similar one in 2017, including the train from W Glacier to Essex, but I exited at St Mary. I did the Gunsight Pass section by itself in 2005 and 2020. I assume from Noname you'll do the Dawson-Pitamakan traverse beneath Flinsch Peak - ...

Firebrand Pass in winter

Any thoughts on a trip to this pass, via snowshoes or otherwise? I hiked over this pass many moons ago as part of a multiday trek and am curious if it is doable in winter (not when the winds are blowing!!). While I'm at it, are there any other winter routes to recommend on the south side of the park?

Today is July 8.
Peak season ends on a late Labor Day Sept 7, 61 days away.
For those of you with late season experience, is it fair to assume the peak season for back country sites is a bit earlier than Labor Day? Please say it is so!!

Re: Sad News - David Parker has passed away

Debby, i am so shocked and sorry to hear this. Like others, i have not been active on this site recently but i will always remember the many ways in which you helped me (and my son, on one trip) solve the logistics of transportation to/from trail heads in 2005-7 (including distant ones like Kintla a...

Re: Sun Road or Route 2?

Thanks for the advice, all. I ended up taking the Rte 2 and Duck Pond Road and was glad i did. Had a few 3-4 min stops for construction on the Rte 2 portion but no big deal and made it all the way to Waterton in just under 3 hours. A few weeks later went to/from Two Med via rte 2 and 49 (leaving Apg...

Sun Road or Route 2?

Starting from Kalispell at 4 pm and heading to Waterton: better to take Sun Rd or Route 2 if one is mainly concerned with minimizing the travel time??

Re: Waterton advance reservations

To the OP, it sounds like you are used to hiking somewhere busier than Waterton. In my experience, few people camp at Alderson, and it is mostly a stop on the way down to the townsite after starting a few hours earlier at Cameron Lake. Goat is a pretty enough spot, but again I have seen few people ...

Waterton advance reservations

I am trying to reserve a few sites in Waterton (Alderson Lake and Goat Lake) for late July and i see on their website that the 'reservable dates' start May 13; but when i called the Waterton office yesterday i was told they do not even take reservations until that date. That seems odd. Was i misinfo...
