I feel VERY fortunate to have camped/hiked in Waterton before the fire - was one of the highlights of my trip to GNP..... Took many awesome pics just before labor day weekend... Hoping for a speedy recovery

First hike in park, started at Red Eagle near the ranger station, hiked to St. Mary Trail, ending at St. Mary Falls. Long day hike. 17.5 miles total. Lots of overgrown areas on trail. thanks all for updates as you folks have "boots on the ground" info.... have seen waterton reports - will hope for the best the week of the 28th when we're supposed to go that way..... in St. Mary on 23rd - guess I'll be up early to get in line on the 24th, ;) i've NEVER been to MT so this...

looks like i need to set the alarm up VERY early on the 24th, huh???

any updates on fires, trail closures? arrive 8-23 with base camp reservations in St Mary KOA and following week in Waterton.... hoping to get some overnight back country hikes in??? Not so sure now?

i am in much the same position - arriving aug 23 - in park for 1, 1.5 weeks.... reservations made at st mary koa and waterton and a hotel night at lake mcdonald.... BUT want a 1-2, maybe 3 day hike..... going to be flexible with all that is going on.... can't wait

Looking the the "5 day look ahead" campground status/schedule at GNP, what does the '!' mean 'Special camping conditions exist here, inquire at the backcountry office' what are the special conditions????

the eclipse was the impetuous for my trip west to GNP... will be in St. Louis area, clear sky permitting, for the eclipse... am curious to hear of experiences in MT during perseid meteor shower... i can only imagine what the dark MT skies look like... i uses to be able to see the milky way from my b...

i'm "guessing" that if I'm on a 4 week adventure that includes SEVERAL national parks, a year pass would be the way to go??? btw - link at the beginning of this thread is dead.... looks like $80 is still the going rate....

hmmmmm...... maybe someday! my local 1/2 marathon in Toledo, Oho - part of the Glass City Marathon, is next Sunday morning...... good luck with your training - maybe a GNP 1/2 is in my future??? I always enjoy a challenge!

thanks for this post! i have been looking all over for a conversion chart for the campground abbreviations - now i have it! reviews help too.... newbie to GNP in August - looking forward to the adventure and this board has been a great resource
