Re: rec.gov - New Beta Campground Notification Feature

This notification feature can be quite useful but as you mention the sites, once open, may be taken quickly. I was able to snag a campsite in Arches NP using the notification last fall. Unfortunately, for high demand locations like Glacier (and Arches) there are a whole bunch of people signed up for...

Re: 2024 Lottery Results

So it looks like they’ve locked out viewing availability unless you had a successful lottery application. Not sure if that also includes if you check before your scheduled time. Working on a solution. I'll be glad to check your route for you. I have an April 21 date in the lottery. I have logged on...

3000 permits/ 40 days/ 5 slots a day =15
I stand corrected. Thanks. I edited my original post.

Re: 2024 Lottery Results

I think they just assign a group of people a day and it starts at 7am MDT. From what I’m reading, the awarded times seem to be every 2 hours throughout the day, every day of the week. Starting at 7:00 am and until at least 3:00 pm. My start time is 3:00 pm. If two hour blocks are allocated starting...

Re: 2024 Lottery Results

I don't think there will much scalping going on. I think most backpackers aren't really interested in that sort of thing. I think some the people accepted will not get permits because some one in their group already got a permit with better options, some will get them and use them for another trip,...

Re: 2024 Lottery Results

I got April 1st. Not sure where that puts me but I guess it's better than not getting anything at all. Does anyone know how many permits they issue per hour and per day? Sorry to the folks who got skunked. The earliest award date is March 21 and the latest is April 30. I would definitely trade my A...

Re: 2024 Lottery Results

Successful! I'll start my planning.
Awarded Date: April 21 is most likely not ideal.

April 8, 2024 Total Solar Eclipse

Anyone planning to view the total eclipse of the sun on April 8th this year? Nancy and I are traveling from Montana to Houston via Delta Airlines. We'll visit friends in Brenham then spend the 6th through the 9th in Austin. Hoping for good weather and safe travels for anyone heading into the path of...

Re: Annual Birkie Thread

Jay,
I'm happy that you had a "fun" Birkie. I'm glad I retired after the 2022 race since scrapped down ice is definitely not my idea of fun.

Re: 2024 Backcountry Permits: BIG Changes!

I am trying to get my arms around exactly how this is going to work... Assuming a "small" group. On March 15th beginning at 00:01 Mountain Time until about 24 hours later I can submit an "application" for an "opportunity" to create an advanced backcountry reservation v...

Re: Jan 15th (roughly)

Now that I look at my previous post, I'm reminded of cold days at Eagle River Nordic in northern Wisconsin. Bert Kleerup would always remind us that no matter how cold it got someone up near Pound in the UP would report colder temps. Those Yooppers know how to tell a story.

Re: Jan 15th (roughly)

Got down to -37 F at my house north west of Choteau MT last Friday evening (1/12/2024). I wasn't home because we were XC Skiing in West Yellowstone. Originally the NWS thought the temps would be warmer down there. I guess it was a little warmer there with daytime temps in the single digits and good ...

Jay,
I enjoyed your photos and stories very much. I eEspecially the tree trunk photos. I swear one was a carved cow moose head and another a horse head.
