Re: Cloud Peak WY

Your plan should work just fine. I did this during the last week of July after a good snow year and had no difficulty. The only thing I'd suggest is to go beyond Mistymoon for your first night. If you can do another 2-2.5 miles you'll be better off. Head towards Lake Solitude. When you're above the ...

Re: Wyoming's Bighorn National Forest/Cloud Peak Wilderness

The road to the TH is gravel so no worries about getting bogged down. Some washboard sections but passable by any vehicle. I probably used an ursack the first time I was there but the last two times I slept with my food. Self-register at the trailhead and keep a copy. Make sure you do this because I...

Re: Wyoming's Bighorn National Forest/Cloud Peak Wilderness

If I had a couple of nights that were NOT on the weekend I'd go up to the West Tensleep TH and hike up past Marion and Helen up to Mistymoon---which is just above the tree line. Nice open views of Cloud Peak once you get to Helen. From the Mistymoon trail junction go left toward Lake Solitude. When ...

Re: Ultralight

I paid full price for my Hooded Aspen (now the Sycamore) but got 25% off my Caribou at Hermits Hut with an online coupon that wasn't supposed to apply to WM...but it did anyway :D

Re: Shuttle from Goat Haunt to Kintla Lake?

This is the ultimate logistical struggle in the park...good luck, you'll need some. Personally, I'd rather hike back to my car and would suggest flipping your itinerary to make it "easier" to do so. IF/WHEN you get your permit post another message and see if you can't work something out wi...

Re: So how's this comparing to 2011?

I was just doing a SWE comparison for the Beartooths last night using the Beartooth Lake Snotel data. The best way to illustrate my findings are with a few photos all taken from about the same place above Jasper Lake, elevation 10,150'+/-, at about the same time of the year (Late July). 2008. March ...

Re: Food Dehydration

I've only had this one a couple of times but it was killer. I believe I cut everything in half to serve 2. One could also swap in freshly caught trout for the Salmon. I'd disregard the cook times. If I were to do it again I'd soak the potato slices and soup mix until soft then dump everything else i...

Re: Food Dehydration

I just got a LEM 10 tray food dehydrator and plan to prepare all of my own backcountry meals. Does anyone have any experience doing this and what are your favorite meals? I need a good pasta recipe. I have been looking at trailcooking.com and plan to make a freezer bag cozy later this week. I also ...

I know it probably won't match Glacier NP but I always have fun exploring new areas too.[/quote] You'd be wrong...It'll match or exceed but you'll have to work harder. Knock around off trail between Titcomb Basin and Ross lake in the northern Winds or in the Fitz. you won't see a soul and you'll def...

Re: Random Tent Photos

I think that's Buffalo Head, down in the southern part of the Wind River country in Wyoming. Really a nice area ... if Glacier is just a little too majestic for you. :P I know it probably won't match Glacier NP but I always have fun exploring new areas too. You'd be wrong...It'll match or exceed bu...

Re: Random Tent Photos

Selkie: Yes. I've got a Cloudburst (for the wife and I) and a Contrail (1-man). Henry was kind enough to include a door and a bathtub floor. Despite being very airy I've never gotten a wet sleeping bag even in horizontal rain. IRG: We did Knapsack from the Peak Lake side---no snow, hardly any on the...
