Re: TR: Summer in Grand Teton National Park, 2023

Al, I want to keep cheering you on each post, just epic in totality. Did you go up static peak ? Ah, skywalk, that makes sense. I was wondering what that was when I saw it, but had since forgotten about it. I swore it wasn’t there last time. I was thinking counterbalance for the tram or some old min...

Re: Backpacking between Granite Park Chalet and Sperry Chalet

Hi Brian, welcome! That indeed is a nice score with both chalets with a short (hikeable) gap in-between. Your first route was actually my first trip in Glacier. I found it on a Trimble website, entitled ‘highlights of Glacier’ or something to that extent. Absolutely incredible. I think you’re correc...

Re: Glacier 2023: One of the fortunate few, Pt 1

Really nice Jay! Thanks for compiling and sharing. That is great you made it to Margaret. I really liked the Pyramid Peak pictures (I’m a sucker for those) and also the shot back down Glen towards the east. So what was the final sheet count- hopefully a surplus? What is your wide angle lens / recomm...

Re: I left my hiking boots in the trunk of the Uber.

Thanks for the trip report! Nice itinerary and looks like all had a good time. I was surprised at how low the Cosley crossing looked, especially that early in the season (not that I’d know, but I’d speculate it is higher earlier than my late season experiences). The trail status mentioned no cable t...

Re: TR: Summer in Grand Teton National Park, 2023

Jealous! Thanks so much for sharing your summer. I was there doing the Teton Crest in early August - the nonstop rain week. It had been a decade since I had been there and wow is it expensive. If I recall correctly, you did the same in Glacier the year prior? That is really cool plan you have. Where...

Headwaters Podcast

I'm not a podcast person - don't drive enough and unfortunately can't get away with headphones in at work, but I have enjoyed Headwaters. It is produced by NPS, but appears to be heavily (mostly?) funded by the Conservancy. It's on season 4 now. I really enjoyed season 1, but production quality was ...

Front Country: 2024

Reminder - reservations are now available for July as it is 6 months out (to the day). I believe the time is 8 AM MST but I haven’t confirmed. This is a change from last year where it started later and released in monthly blocks the first of each month. There also will be some sites reservable 4 day...

Re: 2024 Backcountry Permits: BIG Changes!

Some confessions creeping out: “Returning to a partial lottery system is in line with the public comments we received about the transition of the park’s advance wilderness camping reservation system [to the Recreation.gov system],” Icenoggle said. “We also based the changes on lessons we learned thi...

Anticipation keeps building :)

I assume you have a tripod for the long exposures? What mode do you typically shoot in?

Re: 2024 Backcountry Permits: BIG Changes!

Bravo! Thanks for the link- sanity prevails. Now of course, at $10 a pop, stuffing the ballot box still is feasible, but at least it is a lottery. Last wishes would be increasing fees somehow as a no-show deterrent and moving forward the cancelation time to noon or something such that abandoned perm...

Small world, I was there as well, on the same day?! First backpacking trip at glacier: GRN-MAN-REY-GUN-SPE starting early that year on 7/26 with a group of 6. Piegen pass was 'closed' until the day before arrival due to snow, so Gunsight was ripping with water.

Re: Bear attacks this past weekend

Thanks for the explanation. I've just started rethinking things once I read further about Ursack - it is only meant to last a period of time and not be impenetrable. I struggle with the 'everything smelly' has to go in the hang/bag approach - it's just not practical nor sensible to me. I'm smelly, d...
