Re: Latest 2020 Season Opening News

Thanks, Selkie. I am looking at it as a time to enjoy what’s in my own backyard. I also had to cancel Berg Lake, but in August. I have Lake O’Hara, but only one night. Hoping to pick up at least one more since word is that the buses won’t be running, so I’ll have to hike in. I’ve also picked up a fe...

Re: Latest 2020 Season Opening News

And the waste that will be generated from the to go meals . . .

My decision has been made for me with the border closure— I won’t be able to make it to the Park this summer unless the border opens and in my opinion, it won’t open for tourism any time soon. Maybe September if I’m lucky.

Re: Latest 2020 Season Opening News

You can’t go into the hotel lobbies unless you are an overnight guest. So where do dayhikers use the restrooms or eat their “to go” meals? I can see this being an issue in Many Glacier, for example, where the only picnic and outdoor restroom facilities are at the Grinnell Glacier trailhead, which is...

Re: Latest 2020 Season Opening News

To answer your question though, Orin, I think you might be ok in late June or early July. In a typical year, the backcountry demand seems to go up around midJuly. Last summer, tibber and I walked into the St Mary Visitor Center on July 6 at 8:00 am or so, if I remember right. There was no line and w...

Re: Latest 2020 Season Opening News

I’m not as optimistic that getting a walk up permit will be pretty open. In Canada, the provincial parks are not filling all campsites in order to spread people out more, and to make social distancing easier. If Glacier adopts the same practice, there won’t be 2x the number of sites available for wa...

Sounds like walk ups only if the backcountry opens.

You may recall the name Glacier Park, Inc? That company is now Pursuit:

Re: 2020 Backcountry Permits

Looks like they've paused, or at least haven't updated in 3+ days.
I noticed this as well. :(

I also read on FB that Pursuit (Glacier Park Inc) has been cancelling mid-June reservations in St Mary Village.

Re: 2020 Backcountry Permits

I got approved for 2 nights at Gunsight Lake. This lines up with a 2 night Sperry reservation that we have for 2 nights afterward. The reservation is for the last week of July, so the idea is to change the second night at GUN to ELL, should ELL open up early. It will be interesting to see how things...

Re: 2020 Backcountry Permits

We tried for a few different routes that would take us to areas either one or both of us haven’t yet seen. Our other choices were Chief Mountain to Waterton (with a two night stop for Margaret Lake since we missed it last summer), the Poia/Elizabeth Lake/ Many Glacier Loop, and finally, the Cobalt L...
