Re: 2018 Backcountry Permit Buzz

I was planning on being on the final page, but I read some posts from last year that said you are locked out of your form until it opens. So you have to wait for each page to load on your way to the payment screen. I guess we'll see. Also, you can pre-load your payment info on the site, so you won't...

Re: 2018 Backcountry Permit Buzz

Its been strangely quiet the last week. This is my first year requesting a trip. I do have a quick question: Is it possible to cache food at Goat Haunt? I haven't been able to find any information on this. I'd be passing by there halfway through an eight night trip and it would be nice to save the w...

Re: Sue Lake strategy

My apologies!! I must have had a "senior moment". Duh. 8) Yeah, if you have checked you'll accept substitutes, you'll be fine. Your biggest challenge, the same challenge everyone will have, is how fast can you "click" after 10:00:00:00AM Eastern Time And get a good time. Good lu...

Re: Sue Lake strategy

Thanks for the help! I would bet I've seen most of the backpacking videos from Glacier. They are on when I'm on the treadmill. Those two in particular convinced me to try to piece together the route I am trying to get. The tentative plan is to leave the car in Waterton and end the hike in Goat Haunt...

Re: Sue Lake strategy

Thank you Pete. I've been trying to "learn up" on the permitting system. Right now I have COS->MOL->MOL->KOO->FRA->BOU->HOL->JAN (sept 6-18). Which are very popular campsites. I have the option checked where they can substitute campsites, so I assumed if they couldn't make it work, they wo...

Re: Sue Lake strategy

Thank you Paul. I'll try for a layover day in the MOK area. Who knows what I'll end up with, if anything, but it is fun to plan!

Sue Lake strategy

Hi, I'm planning a Northern Traverse type trip and I'd like to get up to Sue Lake. Does anyone have any opinions on the best strategy? A: Two nights in MOK area, Sue Lake on the layover day without packs. MOK to KOO the next day. B: One night in MOK area, next night at Stoney Indian. Set up camp at ...

Re: Videos from the Sue Lake Bench

Thanks for the videos. That looks amazing. In fact, it just made my list for this summer (assuming permits, etc.). Would it be do-able as a side trip on the way from MOL to STO? I guess you have to carry your pack, since there is nowhere to hang it. Looks like a little less than a mile of steep uphi...

Re: trip advice

Thanks Pete. I just thought if I was going to be the first one in line anyway, I might be better getting "anything" for the earlier part of Sept, then trying to change it on walk up. I guess the closer I can get to my desired itinerary, the better though.

Re: trip advice

Depending on how weather patterns in Glacier unfold this summer, the latter article may or may not have direct bearing on your plans. However, I can attest to the fundamental accuracy of their observations. In 1978, I spent about five weeks in Glacier, roughly from the 20th of August until the 24th...

Re: trip advice

Thank you both. That enjoy your parks site took me from a 10/10 to a 15/10 on the excitement scale. And thanks Paul. I thought you could only stay at FRA for one night per trip, so I put it later in the trip in case I needed to grab it on a walk up permit, it would be later in the trip. In 2017, the...

trip advice

Hi again, I wanted to see if someone could poke holes in this or suggest any improvements. I'm OK with spending lots of time at camps and doing side trips. My priorities are BOU, HOL, and FRA campsites, and Margaret Lake, and it would be cool to see some Moose at KOO. And I can't pick up my permit i...

No Waterton permit pickup this year

In the course of planning my epic adventure, I found out that due to the fires last year, Waterton will not be issuing GNP permits this year. I saw it on the website, then called and talked to a guy at GNP who confirmed. I don't know if that will change, but it won't change before March 15 :). Anywa...

Re: newbie questions on backcountry sites

Thank you all for the help. I'm full on creating my dream itinerary as we speak. I may (probably) have some route questions soon. Just want to give you all something to look forward to :)

Thanks, I'll make sure to have that handy if I end up having to wait in line for a change
