Spring, Summer,, Fall, & Winter 2015-16 Around GNP

Post by PeteE »

Winter turned out to be kind of a bust around here. Maybe Spring will be better.
I rode out to Lake McDonald after work since it looked like it might be a decent afternoon for pictures.
And it was :)

Snaps from Lake McDonald from Friday, March 27, 2015

The horizon is off :( on these things. I wish I could adjust in <1 degree increments. I could fix them.
I used my tripod with a bubble level, but on this type of picture with a long horizon line like a distant lakeshoreline, it's tough.
If you're off just a fraction of a "bubble", it'll show.
(Most people here think I'm off a whole lot more than a fraction of a bubble) 8)
EDIT CORRECTION :
The still pictures above were "hand held". I used the tripod for the video clips. That's not an excuse, but hand holding a camera to <1degree of true horizontal isn't easy for me.
Grid lines help but the dark, distant shore line kind of blended in with the grids for the composition I wanted...if that makes sense to anyone.

I wasn't real happy with the video either for same reason.
I do have some nice clips that will be better with some sort of music.
Maybe people won't notice the horizon being off if Billy Idol's Nice day For a White Wedding playing in the background?
I may "time lapse" them since the cam was on a tripod. Shrink them to a clip of just a few minutes.
It was dead silent. No wind, not much sound other than occasional passing vehicle.
There were times when the reflection(s) were nearly perfect.
Twas a kind of so-so sky toward the East and the Garden Wall. Cloud bank was already building on the Divide with this incoming front.
Western sky was better with some nice clouds. The reflection makes a kind of "burst" effect.

Thanks for posting the pictures, Pete. Looks like a great afternoon in GNP. I think I like the third picture the best.

Thanks y'all :)
I think I like the third picture the best.
Yeah, I liked #3 too Paul. #5 was taken about same time, just a wider view.
The wind had died to nothing. No sounds except for occasional car, and "voices from somewhere" carrying across the water.
wow..it looks beautiful!
Thanks Blanca!
It really was a nice afternoon.
During the drive to the lodge I just kept hoping the wind would not get up.
The wind did come up at the lodge so after video'ing B&C, I drove back to this location.
Turned out pretty well
Thanks

The clouds in that last picture are so great! It looks like two "critters" (moose? rabbit? dog?) running or chasing each other across the sky. These pictures are fabulous. Thanks so much for sharing a little bit of Glacier with us through the winter months.

Thanks, I consider that a really nice compliment coming from you.!
I wish you could have been there to do justice to the scene.
The amazing thing was how long the wind stayed down.

Thanks

Yeah, it's a privilege to be able to get out here as much as I do. Not only is the "scene" beautiful, but the silence, the peacefulness all make the whole "experience" something which cannot be conveyed by even the best pictures or videos. It really is "amazing".
Thanks!

Aren't the clouds neat looking? I love it when you get lucky and have enough clouds to make the pic different/interesting.

You can adjust images by 1 degree in any of the adobe image editing products, photoshop, photodeluxe, lightroom, you can also adjust in many of the free image editing products around also, Paint Shop Pro, etc.

Great photos, Pete! Thanks for sharing. can't believe how calm the lake looks.

The GNP facebook page is reporting that the Two Medicine entrance road is open to Running Eagle Falls. A new destination for you maybe sometime soon?

Thanks :)
It not only "looked" calm, it was calm, and for longer periods of time than I can recall....not that I'm out there every day! LOL
There are days though when I can "predict", to myself anyway, 8) that the air might be calm...Friday was such a day, so I went on out.

We have been getting some badly needed rain lately and the next 4-5 days looks like more of the same.
I'd rather drive to the Many Glacier gate and bike into Many Glacier. Not sure if my legs are up to even a short bike ride. Shameful to admit :(
However, maybe hiking up to Two Med from Running Eagle Falls and looking around would be an option too.
"Quarterly state reports" will be over for the business after this week. I need to be around until that's finished.
So maybe next week I can go over there...and the weather might be improved. :D

The last post for this topic was kind of overwhelmed by other posts.
Did y'all see it?
Lori gave me the "ring" today. She said the crows probably wanted me to have it. 8)
Final irony of sorts is that the ring fits on my left ring finger nearly perfectly! LOL
Yeeehawww! Love them birds!

I went over to park to hike Avalanche, mainly to see what the snow levels and amounts looked like.
Looked pretty sad to me. But as I say in the video. Some years there's a lot; and some years there isn't.
Y'all can judge for yourselves.

The snaps from today aren't really good. I took them so y'all could get a look at how the place looks like right now.
I've seen knee/hip deep snow at the lake around Mother's day a couple years.
Look how low the lake level is with a stiff wind blowing down lake.

I also got a picture(and some video) of something I highly recommend that you don't do.
And that's go messing around down in the gorge where these young folks were.
People have drowned falling in at this very spot since it's not hard to get to.
I criticize them in the video for going down there, maybe unfairly, but I still believe the criticism is warranted.
I hiked with the three of them back from the lake.
They're good kids as I found out. They came up from the Bitteroot Valley. They understood the hazard.
While my comment on the video, "You are done if you fall in here..." is a bit over the top, but not much over.

Thankfully I began my blood sugar med again this AM. When I got to the lake it was 71
That's too low for me, but better than where it's been recently
After a bit of extra dark chocolate, some water, a 20-30 minutes rest , and then "volks marching" back down to the parking lot with the 3 young folks 8) , it was back up to 108--more better :)

Runs about 7 minutes

Stay out of this gorge unless you are 100% confident you know what you're doing is my advice.

This is one of Clyde's corvid cousins--a Stellers Jay. Pictures do not do these bids justice. Their color is incredible if you catch them in the right light.

I rode out to Apgar and then up to Avalanche Creek this afternoon.
It was still very crowded at 4PM today.
Here's a few snaps from Apgar and along McDonald Creek.

Yeah, it was a lil smokey but still a nice day. Don't let this stop you from enjoying the park. I'm headed out to Logan Pass at O'Dark 30 tomorrow morning 8)
Image

It wasn't stopping people here from having fun on the lake
Image

These were taken from under the bridge over McDonald Creek. You can see how low it is.

That's the entire creek flow at this point

Image

Up stream look from higher up. Wide but shallow
Image

Looking down stream from here you can see how low the water is.
