Gear Advice/List: End of July Nyack Trip

Post by Spencer3304 »

Me & my GF will be doing a 63 mile / 5 night loop in the Nyack region at the end of July. Any trip advice would be helpful.

A little background - I have camped in black bear country before (Adirondacks) so I'm familiar with safe food prep/storage protocol. Our current plan is to put the majority of the food in her pack and put the heavy stuff in my pack. I haven't done a multi-day loop back-country loop this long before so I am very excited - but I know that means I am going to forget something critical.

Q1: Is there a recommended place between the Airport and Glacier to pick up bear spray?
A1: [Army Navy Store]

Q2: What is the recommended clothing for a late July Nyack trip?
A2: [ Rain Shell, Hiking Boots, Water Shoes, Layers (25°F - 80°F)]

Q3: Anyone know where to get a GIANT rain cover to fit a massive pack?

Q4: Am I missing anything critical in my gear list?

You should have a blast. You'll need water shoes for crossing the Flathead. Be prepared for downed trees to climb over. The trail crew doesn't get into the Nyack very often. Bring LAYERS for clothes to survive from 25 to 80F. Rain Jacket works for rain and wind. Leave the bear bells at the store, they don't do anything except annoy humans. Maybe look at a backpack poncho as a rain cover. There are several previous postings for where to get bear spray, I don't recall if there's any in CFalls (I get mine in Kalispell). Have fun!

Just about anyplace you stop will have Counter Assault bear spray, it is a very common shelf item during the season, a lot of people pick it up at Army/Navy in CFalls.

No bells, noted.

I was considering bringing shorts (x1), pants (x1), and pants/shorts combo (x1), then sport tech shirts (x3), rain shell (x1), (x1) middle layer between the shirts and shell, and a ridiculous amount of socks.

Army Navy works, bear spray and fuel canisters.

Does Army-Navy have a store in CFalls?
Where is it now?

The store I remember is now a liquor store and farmers market.

Whitefish has an AN store. Counter Assault was $34.95 last week. Decent price this time of year.

dpratt wrote:The one in C Falls has been gone for some time now. Not sure what happened to them, unless they just moved to Whitefish. As Pete mentioned, O'Brien's liquor store is there now. Is it wrong that I frequent the new owner more than I did the old one?

As Dave mentioned, just about any store carries spray around here.
I'm pretty sure they just went out of business.
I used to stop in there occasionally when they were still open.
The stores in WF and Kalispell have been around since I moved here in 2002.
Both are good stores with reasonable prices...imo 8)

I bought a very large rain cover for my expedition pack at REI last summer.

After some searching I found that the Kelty 5500 Tioga is pretty much the same as my pack, just slightly more narrow.
So I will be ordering a Kelty Rain Cover from Amazon ASAP, as it looks like rain this weekend and we are going for an overnight this weekend to test some of the newer stuff.

Old photo - I've gotten a much smaller sleeping bag.
