Ahern Drift

Post by llholmes1948 »

Just curious but I am wondering how Ahern Drift on the Highline Trail was this summer. Does anyone know when it first became "reasonably" passable this year? And did it ever melt out from the trail completely?

Thanks,
Lyman

According to the GNP Trail Status page on the Highline Trail:

July 24, 2019: The Ahern Drift was shoveled out and a 5 foot path was created. Trekking poles recommended but no other gear required.

July 31, 2019: Trail tread at Ahern Drift melted out.

Ralph,

Thanks very much for posting that. I haven't watched this real closely over the years but it strikes me that the complete melt-out by July 31st was a bit earlier than usual. Is that true?

Don't know dates for previous years but I do know that the drift has been blasted to provide a tread well into August at least once.
