Here is a link to a brief article in the Hungry Horse News on the Elk Mountain Trail. It doesn't get much attention probably because it is a steep uphill trail like the Mount Brown lookout trail. I understand that the views from the top are great.
I recall exploring a bit around the start of the trail in 1970 and at that time I don't think the trail was marked until you crossed the Park boundary on the north side of the railroad. I don't recall that there was any parking area for the trail either. However I understood that in recent years the parking area for the trail and the trailhead (both of which I believe were on private property south of the railroad) were now better marked. This article indicates that I am wrong.
The Ranch near the trailhead in 1970 had a sign saying that "Trespassers will be shot on sight." Maybe they have put it back.
