Border crossing

Post by ohioguy »

Thinking of hiking the Lakeshore Trail instead of taking boat across Waterton Lake

Looking at the map the trail to Janet splits long before the Goat Haunt Ranger Station.

Do we have to check in at the US Customs station at Goat Haunt ?

Present regulations require that all persons entering the United States must check in at a Customs Station. You'll have to make the detour to Goat Haunt to do that if you hike the shore of Waterton Lake and plan to go on to Janet.

Legally, of course, you're obligated to check in with the immigration person at Goat Haunt. If you're wondering if you're likely to caught at some point for entering the country illegally ... I'd say the odds of that are pretty small, but for me saving a couple of miles of hiking wouldn't be worth the uncertainty.

Besides, having a Goat Haunt stamp in your passport would be pretty cool!

this past week during the rain storm our friends drove over to waterton for the day w their grandkids. they were stopped at the Canadian crossing, didn't have passports for the kids or a letter from the parents. but they said the border folks were very nice and accepted a call from the parents back at the cabin giving permission for the daytrip. gave the kids flags and stuff.
