Fire

Post by akamina3 »

There is a voluntary evacuation for Waterton.

A fire is threatening Waterton Park from the west. The weather forecast is for hot, dry, and windy conditions. All of Waterton is closed except the highway and the townsite.

Now is not the time to visit Waterton.

The reports and maps are showing that the Kenow fire has reached the north west end of Cameron Lake.

Thanks for the photo, dpratt. Yep- the Kenow Fire blew up today, unfortunately. Calgary News is reporting that it has entered the Cameron Valley and is firmly established along the Akamina Parkway.

Many areas north and east of Waterton have been evacuated.

It looks like the fire really ran overnight.

dpratt,

I really appreciate that you posted the photo of the Waterton fire yesterday. Most of Waterton Park burned yesterday afternoon and last night -- you captured the start of that fire storm.

Not looking good at all right now.
looks like Pincher Creek had to evacuate. You have a place to go?
Hope that front will bring rain/snow your way Thursday.

Tinder dry conditions caused the fire to spread amazingly fast last night... Image

Many of you will have seen the Prince of Wales Hotel on the cliffs overlooking Waterton.

At present, there are 50 firefighters and 3 fire engines from Calgary assigned to try to save the iconic hotel. So far, it is working. The visitor center at Bear's Hump was destroyed earlier today -- and it was only a few hundred yards from the Prince of Wales Hotel.

A tremendous effort is being made to save the town. Sadly, many structures outside the town have already been lost to the fire.

The fire ran 10 miles in just a few hours yesterday.

Amazed by the growth in size... i haven't seen the size of the fire (area) reported accurately in the media but the parks map states a 33,000 ha (>80,000 acre) increase in 1 day... it was about 8,000 ha on Sept. 11th so that puts it around 40,000+ ha in size (~100,000 acres).
