Logan Pass Milky Way Photo

Post by Deb1741 »

My family and I have been staying a week at a Flathead Lake cabin north of Polson every summer for 5 years now. This year, my grandson Braeden and I decided to drive up to Logan Pass one night to take pics of the Milky Way. When we got to the top of the pass we realized that we had forgotten our bear spray and flashlights in a bag at the cabin. We walked up to an area about 100 yards past the visitor's center and waited until it was dark enough to get some pics. Holy Toledo.....is it ever dark up there when the moon goes behind the mountain! The following is one of the photos my grandson got that he put on Facebook.

We were quite surprised at how many people were hiking back from the Hidden Lake Overlook after dark. We also saw at least two people hiking up to the overlook around midnight.

After midnight, we're gonna let it all hang out. (JJ Cale)

Anyway, hiking after midnight. That's crazy talk. Hiking after dark just seems like bad planning. Hiking after midnight sounds like some kind of dare.

Nice photo and a story to go with it.

JJ Cale wrote it. I like this slower version by Eric Clapton.

I have a bright LED flashlight rigged with a red lens filter for knocking around at night.
Red light doesn't mess up your night vision.

When I lived back east I used to hike out(and sometimes back) to bowhunting stands before dawn and back after sunset using a similar rig.
It wasn't as bright as my current rig since LEDs weren't around then.
Didn't have to worry about lions and grizzly bears in the mountains of Virginia. 8)

That said, I'd risk hiking to Hidden Lake overlook in the dark.
