Thanks Dave. I too appreciate your explanation and many efforts. I have to resize mine a little under the 800 x 600 pixels to fall under the 256K restrictions. I just couldn't figure out why they were showing up so small. Guess I missed somewhere along the line the idea to double click on the image to make it bigger.

Guess that means I need to spend even more time on the chat page

Hey all:

I'm having trouble getting the size of my avatar down under 6Kb.
When I reduce the image to 100x100pixels the size is still way too big...25Kb :(
How does one resize to get the image under 6Kb?
What program do you you use?

This is frustrating.
I got the size right. Now I get this message

The upload was rejected because the uploaded file was identified as a possible attack vector.
What the hell does that mean?

I think I've used avatar.com or avatarmaker.com...something along those lines

Two ways to reduce the size of image file are:
1) if the software you are using has a "Save for Web" feature use that. This will compress the file and make it smaller.

2) usually when saving a jpg file you have the option of reducing the file size. My software provides a slider that maxes out at 100%. Moving the slider down reduces the file size.

Hope this helps.

Thanks all.
I figured out how to get the size requirement met.
Now I think it's a Bul.Board software issue...or something wrong on my end. I use Windows.
I get that "attack vector" msg (see last post) when I try to upload to the BB.
Dave said he would help me, but I don't want to be bothering him every time I want to change my avatar.

thanks again all

PS

I will try using your suggestions. I'll try resizing etc. "remotely" and see if it makes a difference somehow.
Maybe using "paint" to resize imbeds something that the BB system doesn't like.

YeeeeeHaaaawwww!

They come runnin' just as fast as they can
Coz' every girl's crazy 'bout a sharp dressed man.

Even baldheaded old hikers at times
The two folks I met as I came down from the Dragon's Tail said I looked like somebody from "Outdoor Magazine" when I was standing on a rock outcrop taking pics. Said they could see my green on white shirts from way off LOLOL!!

I believe I found out what was wrong.
I recalled seeing an option in Windows Gallery Viewer that allowed you to strip out all the "personal" info from the picture. I chose that option after I resized it to the proper size .jpg

Thanks for your help. It kept me trying to find out what was wrong :)

Maybe to clarify what I did for those Windows users who've had trouble.
Crop and Resize your picture to the proper size and save as a .jpg
Then open the picture and Right Click on it
Open "Properties"
You'll see a link in blue at the bottom that says:

"Remove Properties and Personal Information"
Click on that and save the result.
That's the copy what you upload to the chat BB.

Yes,

In order to upload avatars to the system, you need to make sure that the personal information is stripped out of the picture, or the system security software will deny the upload, this is to help prevent malicious code being uploaded and distributed.

Hey photo experts!!!!

OK here goes! I need some help and feedback! Trying to work on getting some pics attached for viewing as I am way behind on trip report and have lots of pics!!!. Followed the resizing but couldn't guarantee that personal info was removed. Tried it and clicked on the appropriate "remove" choice and it still seems to be on the pic. (like the date!) Yikes!!! Can't attach like in sending pics via email????

How then do I actually attach the file to my post? Sorry for being so inept!

HI all,

Think I am finally figuring it out. If I did, you will see a pic of the start of our Glacier trip with the first hike on 8/15/12!
