"Boss Ram" and Logan Pass October 14th, 2014

Post by PeteE »

October 14th would have been my Mom's 95th birthday. She loved nature and bird/creature watching.
It was a Tuesday and I didn't have to work.Got me thinking of "nature" so...

Who knows if the road stays open till the 19th or not?
So I went, and I'm glad I did.
Sometimes just one snapshot is worth an all day trip.
"Boss Ram" here(2nd pic) is pic of the day for me!
3:28 video of sheep

The two rams(Boss Ram had a buddy pictured later) were MAGNIFICENT specimens imo. These boys had great horns--"Boss Ram" below has nearly perfect symmetry.
Their bodies were massive with luxurious thick coats. The video I have of them shows their coats better. They are beautiful animals any time.
But...It's really nice to see these animals when they are in prime condition in the fall. I love this first pic of Boss Ram.
I should say that I always take extreme care around these animals.
As docile as these rams act at times like this, they are never to be trusted, let along trifled with....as we say down South 8)

They lick the road dirt for the natural minerals that may be in the dirt as well as salts used on the roads

So I'm licking your car

What are you going to do about it?

I took a bunch of pics of these rams. The sheep were in no hurry to quit licking that car. The owners were behind me taking pictures :)

Isn't Boss Ram a handsome ram? I like this picture. Look at his ears and how well insulated they are. His coat is really dense. Boss Ram is ready for winter.
Image

Look at Boss Ram's buddy. No slacker in size either. These boys have put on a LOT of weight in the 60 days since mid August when many of you saw them here at Logan Pass.
Image

They could be, and maybe are, twins. I was really taken by how big and healthy these Big Horn Rams were. They were just beautiful animals.
Image

The wind was brisk and temp was high 30's. I didn't have the clothes I wanted so I had to wear an old ratty hoodie for it's hood. I headed across the meadow and then up the creek toward the Triple Falls. Looking back down the creek

More like a "single trickle" in mid October

Yessir Officer! It was some lanky old geezer in a dark hoodie that done it 8)

I left the creek and traversed across that area just above the series of "slab layers" you see from down below. I then worked down hill on the far southern end of the big meadow area. These next ones are views from over there. Few people go over on that side. Not anything to see especially. You do get a different look into the St Mary Valley

You can see St Mary Lake in the distance

Looking at Piegan Mt. over the creek just before it becomes a waterfall. This is not a place to "grabass" in the in June trying to get a perfect waterfall picture. Lot more water coming down as well as snow bridge hazards, icey rocks, etc..

Not much exercise, but beats being at home

Thanks for looking. One day I'll get the video from this day up, including the big horns :)

That "look" (of Mr Boss Ram) is a good one to have. Comes in handy with kids.

I finally looked at this video. I always enjoy the commentary. I appreciate the effort and I know video takes a while to process.
