I think that is the tunnel under the Going-to-the-Sun Road at the Jackson Glacier overlook that connects the Gunsight trail with that section of the Piegan/Siyeh trail that starts at the overlook.

From the Piegan trail, looking thru to the Gunsight trail.

I was showing some visitors the Jackson Glacier overlook, and one of their
kids goes wandering off and asks me about the tunnel. I had no idea it
was there. Must have been a leftover from the days when they ran
the horse tours between the chalets.

I believe that tunnel is part of the official trail and I think it would be considered part of the Continental Divide trail as well.

I think that the trail from the Jackson Glacier Overlook heading north is considered the Piegan Pass trail but I don't know if the Park Service has an official name for that trail in contrast to the Piegan trail that starts at Siyeh Bend. I keep overlooking the fact that you can start a hike to Piegan Pass or Siyeh Pass at the Jackson Glacier Overlook instead of Siyeh Bend. I don't know what the elevation difference is between these two starting points.

When my daughter and I were in Glacier in early June 2007 we were considering a number of accessible hikes. One of the hikes we considered was to try to hike up the Piegan Pass Trail or the Siyeh Pass Trail as far as we could go since my daughter had never (and still hasn't) done either trail. We didn't harbor any illusions of getting very close to either pass. However we gave up on it when we realized that the road at that time was open only as far as the Jackson Glacier Overlook and was not open to Siyeh Bend.

Then after our trip was over, someone kindly pointed out that we could have done this hike starting at the Overlook. We had sadly completely ignored this possibility. Duh! Not very smart or imaginative on our part (well mostly on my part because I had the map!)

Lyman:
Here's some information for you>

The distance to this junction from Siyeh Bend is 1.2 miles... and about 1.4 miles from Jackson Overlook.
The big difference is that there is about 1000ft of elevation gain from Jackson Overlook to the trail junction.
The gain from Siyeh bend is about 400ft. So if doing day hikes to either pass, it be "silly"? in my opinion to start at Jackson Overlook.
The trail between this junction and Jackson Overlook is for the backpackers; It makes a link to the Continental Divide Trail(via the trail junction at REY) as well as the Gunsight Pass trail.

Pete,

Thanks for that information.

I think I will continue to begin my Siyeh and Piegan hikes at Siyeh Bend.

Yes, I hiked Jackson Overlook to Piegan Pass on the last day of one of my trips because the road was closed from Jackson Overlook to Logan Pass for snow.

It is definitely more a difficult route than Siyeh Bend starting point; the "up" starts right at Jackson Overlook and is pretty steady to the junction.

I have hiked down from the Siyeh/Piegan Pass trail to Jackson Glacier Overlook. I have never hiked up that trail. There was no road closure, I just wanted to see the trail and talked someone else into going down with me. The trail was a fairly steep down and down all the way. Much of the trail was in the trees but I do remember some open stretches. As Pete point out, the Siyeh Bend is about 1,000 feet higher than Jackson Glacier Overlook so we come down about 1,000 fee more on that trail than if we had exited at Siyeh Bend. And the tunnel at Jackson Glacier Overlook is a neat structure.
