dpratt, yeah, I went to cubical hell to avoid it. Still warm tonight at 9 pm. Humid too.

Pete, I have a photo idea for you.

McDonald Falls. That's all I know and Dave Gaylord shot the photo. So no idea of time of year or where on McDonald Creek

Bring a tripod. :D

Bring a tripod. :D
Thanks Jay :)

No joke about the tripod.
My hands aren't that steady!
Neutral density filter would be helpful too. Don't ya think? 8)

I think I know where falls is....or I can find it. But...
Who knows when they'll allow access to Lake McDonald Lodge?

Anyhow...
Tomorrow, I'll be hiking with a GMS group(10 so far) out in Jewel Basin.
Jewel Basin is east of Kalispell in the Swan Range.
Clayton Lake and Pioneer Ridge 10-12 miles +-2000ft is the estimate.
Go in from the west side of Hungry Horse reservoir on FR1633 if you google it.

Jewel Basin has gotten some snow above 5500-6000ft. Looks like we might get up over 6000ft.
Should be a great day to hike. CLEAR, smoke free sky!!!
Mostly sunny, temps in the 40-50range with light wind.
Good for pics. We'll see.
Trip coordinator did say the trail might be overgrown...and wet. So I'm taking rain pants.

later

Yes- I'd also love to hear about your Jewel Basin hike. I've been thinking about adding it to my list.

Hi Doug and Tina :D

I just got back.
A fun day with the GMS group--10 of us.
We began about 0945 and finished at 1600. These GMS folks don't mess around.
No way I was gonna be able to keep up with the 5 "hard core" guys, so I hiked up and back with the slower folks 8)
And they weren't slackers!

The hike ended up at 10.8 miles and +- about 2200ft.

Image

The first couple miles were up a draw to the foot of Clayton Lake--and we "marched" pretty much straight up to that point non stop.
At Clayton Lake trail junction we took the Pioneer ridge "trail". Lots of down trees and more of a bushwhack in many places.
I'm glad I wore my rain pants. The brush was head high in spots. It wasn't too wet but still not a lot of fun.
The trail opened up some around the lake. Nice views of the surrounding area.
Once on Pioneer ridge proper, the views opened up nicely all around.

Here's a couple pics. I'll have more and some video later. Gotta clean up and eat.

EDIT ADD:
I'm beat :)
Got lazy after cleaning up and eating 8)
I got the pics resized and uploaded. I'll post them in the AM.

I would not want to do this hike in the heat of summer. Trail is overgrown in many places and would probably be "tick city". This is the best time of year to come. Bring your bear spray. We saw lots of fresh bear sign. There were wolf tracks of at least two different sizes indicating a possible wolf pack in the area.

The hike to Clayton Lake and Pioneer Ridge begins at the end of NF1633 on the west side of the Hungry Horse reservoir.
The trail head is about one mile down hill from here.

We saw lots of fresh bear sign. Tracks like these were on the trail in many places. There were also many wolf tracks.

There were still many huckleberries along the trail, Charlotte picking some here.

Nobody has cleaned up the dead falls in quite a while. Some were a real pain. I was worried that I would rip my new(ish) Patagonia rain pants crossing them. My rain pants survived unscathed...unlike one of my fingers 8)

Nice to see the pictures altho it looked cold. A lot of burn area but that opens up the views. Nice pic of you up on the Ridge!

We stopped at Hungry Horse on our way to the west side in August and drove a bit around the side. We saw the osprey, saw them in 2012 when I also stopped by. Whenever I'm that close I always stop as my parents did in 1955 (I was in my momma's belly).

LOL!! Looks worse than it was. My doc says my skin is old and fragile plus I take baby aspirin every day.
So every time I barely touch something I bruise and/or cut.
I usually hike with my stick in my right hand, especially if, as was here, it's my "downhill" hand.
I use my left hand to beat bushes, branches, and crap out of my way.
So my left hand has always taken a beating when hiking, or hunting...carrying rifle or bow in right hand.
All that blood came from a tiny puncture from a thorn, stick, I dunno. Didn't notice it until blood was dripping off my finger.
That's why I usually wear those work gloves now days. Too cold to wear them and I didn't think I'd need them.

Thanks Tibber!
Yeah it was a chilly morning. The sun never really baked off the clouds. Thankfully there was very little breeze, even on top of the ridge.
I saw several osprey nests as we drove in. That reservoir is HUGE and I'm sure there are many ospreys breeding there.
The views are good once on the ridge. You can see the mountains for miles. The ridge runs several miles beyond where we stopped.
This is a good hike for the fall before too much snow arrives. You can't get back here in a vehicle after they stop plowing and gate roads, etc.
I might do it again if it was actually going to be a nice cool day with little wind.
Summer would be brutal "semi bushwhacking" that trail in the heat and bugs
. :(

Photobucket is a pain and I'm done with it. I found my old Flickr account so it's back to Flickr.
Flickr is ok but tedious to post images from it.

Since I won't be putting much, if any, content here anymore....
Here's what you need to do if you want to follow what I'm doing henceforth:

Click on my email icon and send me an email and include your email address in the body of your message
DO NOT try to send me a PM.
I have disabled that function.
I'll then send you links to images and videos directly.

"Lurkers" will have to
1)register here on the chat and email me, or
2) go to my YouTube site or Flickr site and try and contact me there.

The content I will be putting on Flickr, and especially YouTube, will include more than just Glacier National Park.
I'll be posting content on a variety of subjects---feeding my crow buddies here at home 8) ....to political/economic issues I have an interest in.

And while the GNP related material will be pretty much "non controversial"....
I'm virtually certain that the "snowflakes and tinkerbells" out there will find much of what I say about economic/political topics--- "offensive". 8)
Tuff stuff because I'm not in to "political correctness" and there are NO "safe spaces" in my world
Please keep that in mind if you decide you want to follow me and what I'm doing.

The next couple weeks are going to be somewhat busier than normal for me at work.
So I may not be doing much outdoors for a while.

You can still see several places where the Sprague fire is still smoldering.

Yeah, and that's just what's visible from Apgar.
It'll take a good heavy snowfall to end it.
Rained this morning and I had to work.

Squall now and very windy here in Coram. I'm on the way to the park to drive out to Avalanche. See what there is to see.

Pete,
I love your great photo;s and appreciate the on-the-spot reporting, it really helps for thus who are separated from the park to have locals who are willing to jump in their truck and run up to the park and get us some pics of whats going on real-time!

Hey Matt:

Thanks for the support. I enjoy getting out and around when I can to report what' going on---from my perspective.
I have some pics and video from Lake McDonald Lodge yesterday. I didn't get to Avalanche. Maybe tomorrow. I don't know yet.

The fire didn't burn down from Mt Brown towards the lodge nearly as far as I thought from looking at the fire maps.
It spotted in places down from the ridge line, but it looks to me like it was pretty much stopped AT the ridge line.
So good job from the fire fighters on that score. Maybe that will make sense when the pics and video are posted.
My Sony download program is not working at the moment :(

Bonnie and Clyde are fine. I didn't get to Avalanche because I was having fun with them.
Clyde's "halix" on his right foot doesn't look great. He limps, but seems to be coping with it ok.
So hopefully I'll have something later today or this evening.

I was going to ask about Bonnie and CLyde!! I've been trying to train some crows in my neighborhood to chase the woodpeckers away form my house!! So far no luck, although they have trained me to give them peanuts!!
They are interesting creatures!!
