2017 "Snaps" Around Glacier plus...

Post by PeteE »

Hi All :)

With DaveParker's blessing...
I'm moving my "running report" from Trip Reports down here to Photography.
At the risk of flattering myself 8) I wasn't really all that comfortable about a running report in the Trip Report forum.
I often felt my constant, almost daily updates "stepped on" other chatters trip reports, burying them...and maybe they were overlooked at times.
And that's not right.

I can do my thing down here just as easily and be less obtrusive. 8)
Besides, most of what I do on here I document with photos and video anyway.
So I believe it will fit ok here in Photography.

Pete, this is a really nice photo of Mr. Lincoln made especially good taken from your low perspective.

Great photo, Pete. I agree about the metallic images. They really 'pop'! I know Costco does the metallic stuff so I may try it too,

Thanks Tim. Mr Lincoln was an impressive goat. A true monarch!
He pretty much ignored a mere human intruder like me 8)

Thank you Carol. That perspective made the image for me.
Just luck I was already lying down

Thanks Ken! Yeah, I have to format and size images in a certain way for PhotoFinish.
I don't know exactly how to do that yet..
So I'll try Costco first. See how that turns out.

The morning was nice but I couldn't get away till 630PM. By then it had clouded up at Apgar. So I played around a bit. All these are with my A77MkII and manual Rokinon 16mm f2.0 lens. I like this lens.

Looking like rain over much of the next 3-4 days .
Later.

Quite a few campers at the Apgar Picnic area. Fires smelled good.
Image

A couple shots around the shoreline. Didn't look promising for a sunset pic here.
Image

Image

Image

The Camas Road is open so I drove out to the North Fork where the sunset was a little better. I was standing in the back of Jaybird with camera on a tripod on the roof. The mosquitoes were EATING me. That time of year.

Again nice shots! I like what you're doing here! I like the perspective on the dock shot.

Yeah thanks :D , I liked that shot too Ken. Some kids on the other side of the dock doing wedding pics of some kind.
They stayed off the dock which was lucky for me.

Here's a few snaps from today at Lake McDonald Lodge

I had a late lunch at the Glacier Grill in Coram, a cheeseburger and fries. Burger cooked med/MR, perfect :)
I like their fries. Crispy with a hint of "something" I cant place. So if Lauries doesn't suit you on your way to the park, maybe the Glacier Grill will. They have good pizza too.

Image

This is a good 1/3lb+ burger. I couldn't finish all the fries. $8.25 with water to drink.
Image

I thought I would take a walk through Sprague Creek campground and take a few snaps. Sprague Creek CG is a beautiful campground set among large cedar trees between the Sun Road and the lake. The proximity to the road makes it noisy and smelly at times. The traffic usually dies down after dark. The sites on the lake are really nice imo. Nice views of the mountains across the lake. There is also a day use picnic area as well. Good place to do a picnic lunch if you can get in there 8) Bonnie and Clyde had a nest one year at the far end of the picnic area.

The sites are on a loop beginning here
Image

About half way down the loop.
Image

At the end where the loops heads back to the entrance. The road is dead ahead just 25-30yards past that food locker in the distance.
Image

Looking towards the lake at the interior area inside the loop just before getting back to the entrance. Nice little CG. I suspect being a camp host here is a highly sought after job. 8)
Image

All the pictures in this post are uncropped. All were with my Rokinon manual focus 16mm lens. So unlike using a zoom lens, you have to move and get in just the right spot. My Dad used to talk about doing that. He wasn't a big user of zoom lenses, in part because the really good ones were very expensive in those days. I liked this view of the bridge of Snyder Creek. The first shot is 1/4 second at f22. The 2nd is 1/6second at f16

30 second video

Image

Image

This shot is ok, but I decided the lodge showing was a "distraction" so I lowered camera for the two above.1/4sec at f22

New timbers, part of ongoing repairs to the lodge

dpratt wrote:Wow, mosquitoes already... Thankfully they haven't shown up around here yet.

Saturday was a beautiful day. I'm not surprised to see so many campers in Apgar.
Yep, lot's of peoples out this weekend. Lots of bikers like PizzaBob's daughter :D
I took my "free" bike I got from Bossman, and old but good Trek, to have different handlebars put on and get tuned up.
New cables and new brake pads, etc. The guy told me that it was too small for me...which it is.

But I'm not spending mega dollars on a new bike I won't ride that much. I just use it to save walking most of the time.
I "park and ride" when going to places like Kintla Lake in the spring when the road is closed.
I seriously doubt you'll find me riding up to Logan Pass, or even the Loop. 8)

Yeah, it was a bit weird about the mosquitoes. They were really bad.
I was at a point about 3/4 mile north of the bridge. High off the river where I wouldn't have expected them.
I didn't see any mosquitoes at Sprague Creek or around Lake McDonald where one might have expected them.
Better skeeters than ticks though. God, I hate ticks....and they are out now.

pete

PS

Regarding the pictures of the Snyder Creek bridge...
I used my short little tripod with my old pistol grip Opteka ball head with bubble level.
That in combination with the A77's internal artificial horizon line/level made getting the camera "squared up" really easy.
I was pleased that the creek, creek bank, bridge, everything came out "leveled" well.
I hate it when pictures are even slightly "tilted" off dead level.
I'm learning....or tryin' hard 8)

A brief break in the weather was forecast and brief it was--for me anyway. 8)
Early this morning was rainy and nasty so I waited a while and it cleared up somewhat.
Got to Lake McDonald about 10AM. Nice crowd already and the lot would be nearly full--both sides--when I left.
Here's a couple snaps from my P&S. I may have gotten a few decent shots at the falls.
Those are on my A77II and I'll have them up sometime tonight.

Lots of people out there today in spite of the rain.

Taken from the bridge. I walked up to the falls for some pics.

EDIT ADD:
I looked at the pics from the falls. They weren't good.
So I'll wait till next trip and hope I have something better to post.

Pete, thanks for the tour. I have a Rokinon 35 and it's a sharp lens, but big and heavy. I've thought about the 14mm for years. Sharp as hell but needs some distortion help in Photoshop.

Although I couldn't do the camping trip to the East side, I did manage to get out to Lake McDonald for a few snaps Thursday.
It was a pretty nice day. Warmest so far this year at 75F. :) Just the slightest breeze, but enough to screw up a good reflection.
The only lens I had was the 35mm that was on the camera since I wasn't planning on going out.
35mm is the "normal" lens for the A77II
I have a case I'm fixing up for my lens. That way I might have what I need next time 8)

So I had to move around to frame each shot with the camera.
I like to do that rather than do a lot of cropping later.
The only pics I cropped are the "upside down" mountain reflections of Stanton.

Here are a few I liked.

Where your prayers were answered...or not.

Apgar beach

I cropped the top of these two "upside down" reflections taken near the dock at the lodge

This was the view I wanted but an ever so slight breeze screwed it up

From near the dock at the Lodge

I liked the colors of the rusty metal pilings this one

Not a bad reflection when the breeze would die.

Nice clear water

Dead tree roots are always fun

That breeze again !

I figured Lyman might be interested in these pics. :)
It looks like they have finished the exterior work on Lake McDonald Lodge. It appears they replaced most, if not all the big support timbers??

Image

Image

Taken from the West Glacier bridge. The Middle Fork is rising. They expect rivers to continue to rise with the warm weather and rain in the forecast.

Pete,

Those are great photos and thanks for posting them. I enjoyed seeing the photos of the work at Lake McDonald. When I worked there the balcony was always where the group employee photo was taken and when my daughter gives me a lesson in scanning sometime I will have to try to post one. Some of the employees were on the ground level and some on the balcony. Except for the first year I would be on the balcony. I think the first year I was at ground level standing beside my boss. The next two years I was the boss and could stand where I wanted. I would usually try to stand by a good looking person so it would reflect well on me.

Thanks Lyman and David!
I was out there again today for a little while. I was a couple hours late for the nice blue shy and good clouds.
The lake was glassy and so good reflections, but the sky was crap :(

Image
This shot was with my 47 year old Minolta Rokkar 58mm f1.2 lens ffrom my old SRT101 system. The field of view is about that of an 88mm lens. It's a very sharp and fast lens. I'll find a use for it.
Image

So I drove up to the lodge to shoot some pics in the woods just west of the lodge---where that exit road comes out from the lodge to the Sun Road.
There's a creek with no name. Beautiful spot. The color, all those shades of green, were intense in person. So quiet and peaceful. No sounds except the creek and birds. I could have nodded out against this tree
8)

Image

Image

Image

Image

These two shots were the same creek on the uphill side of the Sun Road

Image

Image

Bonnie and Clyde had been into a carcass and looked kinda nasty. Bonnie also looked "haggard" too.
She kept her bill open like in the lower picture.

Clyde's "throat ruffle" was nasty. I don't really want to think about whatever they had been rooting around in 8)
