I know I am a few days behind on this but I enjoyed the update on Shangri-la. the trip through the woods looks a bit more challenging with the trees down.
Hey Bill:

The down trees are no big deal if you know where you're going...and you do. 8)
The creek was a bigger issue for me. Glad someone made the "tree bridge".
Bummer that Iceberg lake is closed at the moment.
Im really majorly PO'd at the moment. Losing my glasses has given me a headache in more than one way.
Im hoping for a miracle and for once Walmart will be early on a delivery!!!
And the %¥€¥×% keeps coming.
I came into Kalispell early this AM to update software in a machine before opening(Thursdays are busy).
Only to find they locked my software up in the office last night!
So here i sit waiting for the day shift runner to arrive and open. LOLOL.

Waiting on the runner and WallyWorld...

Hoooray!
Will miracles never cease.
My glasses came in.
Now, If I just survive the traffic driving back to WalMart in Kalispell....I'll be good.
The prospect of sitting out the weekend and maybe beyond was really depressing.

Thanks Paul, I did get out.
Didn't quite go as planned! LOL

Here's the video which runs 9:11 About 5 minutes of goat video from the overlook

Looked hazy early driving up, but turned out quite a nice day

Is the trail blocked by that remaining snow on Clements?

Parking lot sleepers

This couple were in the video of the goats at the overlook. e were the only people at the overlook when the goats came by.

That red dot marks where that gal fell through the snow bridge.

 I hadn't noticed the trail closure at the trail head.
Image

The small group of trees in the foreground has become a favorite place for the goats to hang out due to all the people peeing in there. The constant presence of the goats has attracted more "lookers" and consequently even more peeing in the woods. And people are being careless moving around in the trees to get a better look or photo of the goats. I wish my camera had been working. "General Patch", and BIG old Billy I've seen for the past few years, came charging down the hill to run off another goat that was pawing/licking an apparently good spot. The goats "hang out" on the top of the northern end of the "un named ridge"...overlooking that grove of trees. Birds eye view of people doing what they do in the woods. I expect trouble one of these days.

"Hank" out sunning on a nice flat rock, surveying his neighborhood.

Skiers upper left.
I couldn't see General Patch's left side when I made the video and this shot. He has a palm sized bare spot about midway back on his left side where no hair grows. General Patch is an older goat imo. I've seen him around Logan Pass for several years. Another photographer I spoke to last year says he has see this goat around a "long time". He is a pretty big goat and it was apparent when he came charging down the hill later on in that patch of woods when I was returning from the second saddle. He looked about 1/3 larger than any of the other goats there. Then I saw him again about an hour later down below the Hidden Lake trail. He was laying in the snow giving people a good photo op since he was safely 50ft or so below the trail.

General Patch, King of the Logan Pass Boardwalk---July 15 2016 General Patch last year.
He likes that boardwalk. I suggest you do not approach him and "give way" to him on the boardwalk.

The Geezer out on that last snowfield going out. It was still pretty firm and crusty/icy in spots. I worn MicroSpikes out, but later on coming back it was mushy.
Plus, the several dozen people who came after me had beat a better track in it.

Image
Image

Just part of the crowd who came up after me. I sat up on the rocks having a snack. I changed batteries after this shot. When I got to the second saddle my camera malfunctioned. Would not turn on. I tried 3 batteries. And that was it. I walked back to the parking lot after another stop at the overlook.
And of course when I got home, it worked. I'm sure it's related to when I dropped it a couple months back :(

Tuesday, July 25th was the easily best day of "hiking" I've ever experienced in Glacier Park.
Thank you so much Ralph for making this day possible!

Summiting Reynolds Mt. via the "Grand Tour Route" which includes a traverse across the north face(the face seen from Logan pass Visitor Center)
Ahhh Ahhhheemmm, that traverse was just a teeny bit narrower than a "sidewalk" 8) ...
However it was probably the easiest part of the ascent route.

pete

I will get a proper trail report done as soon as I can.
The day was gorgeous and I have pictures and "Helmet Cam" video as well.
Been a long day. I also attended the GMS spaghetti picnic at Swiftcurrent z after finishing the climb

Wow; great that you made it up there!!!!

Just the description I've heard regarding exposure on Reynolds puts this on my "will never do" list...

Thanks all!
You have no idea how much fun I had.
I ended up going to the GMS spaghetti picnic at Swiftcurrent.
Didn't get home till 11:30PM so like a 20 hour day.
Gotta go to work. I'll be back with a trip report.
I'll also give y'all some info on travel times and road info.
Spoiler alert:
The Bad news is: There are 9(nine) small construction areas on the West side between Apgar and The Loop.
But there is good news as well 8)

pete

This is part of that traverse on the North face. It's pretty much like you see the entire way across. I'll improve this pic later in the TR.
It's not much more than a typical goat trail running along the bottom of those vertical cliffs. "Sidewalk" indeed! 8)

It is in these circumstances that I could probably ask dozens of questions (I LOVE to learn about process), but the first one is: at what point does a face like this move from non-rope to rope? I mean, this looks like you should be using more than just careful footing (to me, the non-climber).

Truly amazing.

First, you should know that I'm no "mountaineer" and not qualified to answer that question other than to give you my opinion.
And I'll try to answer anything you ask if I can. People should ask questions. If you are serious about doing 'hikes" like this, I would encourage you to join GMS and/or a local club. Get someone who is qualified to help you the right way 8)

Most everything I know I have learned was by the, "By Guess and By Golly" method.
Not the best way. :)

I don't believe a rope belay would be necessary on a section like that. It would be time consuming for one thing--at least I think it would.

The elevation gain as you traverse across that particular face is pretty gradual. The goat trail is reasonably good albeit narrow with a few spots where you want to be very careful about your foot placement.
The entire mountain is covered in loose scree of varying size and shapes. You'll see and hear what I mean in the helmet cam video when that's posted.
Walking on that stuff can be challenging at times.
One of the worst surfaces to walk on is when you have a hard rock surface that is covered with a thin layer of small scree.
Really tricky when the surface slopes "down hill" when traversing a steep exposed slope.
The scree acts like "ball bearings". Your foot and slide and lead to a fall. Not good, and there were places like that.
I have some of that on helmet cam.
Some people with good balance and strong legs and get over spots like that with relative ease. Not me 8)

Then there are sometimes rock formations that protrude out from the face. Gotta watch for those--another reason for a helmet.
The key is going slow and paying close attention to where your walking. Duh 8)
Scan ahead a little for potential hand holds if needed when it gets real "skinny or thin".

Some recommend "not looking down".
Well, imo, there's looking down, and then there's looking down.
You have to look down to see where you're going.
That said, you don't want to find yourself "staring" down.
That may lead to being mesmerized and lead to a fall.

I look down all the time because I love the view(s) as well as watching where I'm going.
Not good to gawk at the scenery when "moving" though---that's dangerous. Stop moving, THEN look.

Hope all that helps.

Pics coming up
