2018 "Snaps" Around Glacier National Park

Post by PeteE »

I felt that I should quit posting on that Lake McDonald thread in the General Topics section and move down here.
This is a more appropriate place for what is mostly pictures and related commentary.

Tuesday, January 23, was a pretty decent day so I took a quick run out for some pictures.
Winter Weather Advisory out for tonight. The weather will be showery for days after.

I didn't see very many people out there considering how nice it was.

Been "warmish" and sloppy lately but there's still a little snow around in Apgar 8)

I liked the "composition" on these next few of the lake even though they aren't great images otherwise.
I like converging and diverging elements in images like these.

I spotted this view and fortunately there was a tiny place to pull off for this shot. I like this pic.

Darn! You're right. bummer we missed each other.

Those are beautiful photos of Lake McDonald Pete. I'd love to photograph the park in the winter, but I don't have the courage to brave the cold and driving on snow/ice!

Hey Doug!
Thanks for the pics and video clip.
Did you take the interior shots through the windows?
I never thought to do that....duh. :(

One correction...
I would bet my life that was "Bonnie" you saw and took pics of and not Clyde.
Which is why you you didn't get closer than you did.
I say it's Bonnie because in that last pic, she was in the act of making what I call her "kadoodle" call.
She was doing that call, or her "clock-clock" call.

I'm glad you saw that bald eagle. There is a pair of them out there.
It's likely the pair that have nested near the head of the lake, or a new pair.
(The nesting eagles is why they close off the head of the lake at times)
I've seen them fly over a couple times---a bit of video in a recent post up in the other thread,
The eagles are one of B&C's few enemies---and the eagles will kill B&C if given the opportunity.
The eagles know B&C will steal their eggs or nestlings if given a chance.
B&C know about the eagles as well and keep their distance.

Again, thanks for posting the images Doug.
We'll get together out there yet!

Thanks Carol. I appreciate you compliments since you're a far more accomplished photographer than I.
There endless opportunities around Lake McDonald for good images. I need to get out more and check out views from "less traveled places" around the lake.
Maybe snowshoe around the NW side of the lake for a change.
There are winter days where the air is just sooooooooooo clear that the landscape looks almost "surreal".

I'm very lucky to live here 8)

Thank you Jay.

dpratt, I hope you aren't upset about me correcting you on confusing Bonnie for Clyde.
It's impossible to tell them apart unless you know what to look and listen for.
I don't know which is which until I get close enough to see Clyde's bent halix, or, they make a sound.

EDIT 1-26
Apparently, and unfortunately, the "haters" are still out there...so I had to delete the video.

Cheers anyway 'cause I ain't taking the bait this time 8)

Thanks for the pictures Pete and Doug.

It is fun to see the Lake MacDonald and Lake MacDonald Lodge areas in January. There is a lot more snow than in November.

dpratt wrote:Pete - of course not. You know them better than I do. I appreciate the education! I'll know what to look for next time. While I certainly see ravens out by me all the time, they are a lot more skittish than Bonnie was. It was really cool to see her communicating up close.
:)
Thanks Doug.
Those two are fun to watch.
You never know what they'll do.
One day Bonnie was in a tree nearby and Clyde was on Squeeze.
Bonnie let out three very loud, "harsh", low pitched(for her) calls.
Clyde answered in what sounded to me like an exact "mimic" of her calls---three and very loud.
Then the two of them took off flying like bullets toward the lodge.
It's that ability to mimic each other like that that I find really interesting. 8)

I've only heard them do that a 3 times.

Hey ND. :)
How's life in the chilly mid west?
A friend of mine just began working over there someplace in ND. 20days on/10 off.
Bugger of a drive this time of year
You do much photography in winter? Or just play with what you took earlier?

Yeah, the lake always has a different look. Never the same.
Lots more snow. More today. Been snowing lightly since daybreak.
Thanks.

Pete,
I saw a shirt yesterday that fits me to a tee. "I DON'T DO WINTER".

It's perfect!!!!!!

Taken late afternoon down at Two Medicine last August as a light shower passed through.

"The Shining" 8)
Great movie.
My ex wife believed Jack Nicholson was "creepy" and probably was possessed!

Moving along....

Sunday was a dreary day but I went to the park anyway.
Didn't stay too long as I got a call from work.
Here are a few "snaps".

US2 was ok by the time I got to the park.
The Sun Road was pretty slick.
The outbound lane to lake McDonald had been plowed and sanded in a few spots.
I passed the plow doing the inbound lane on the way out there.
The road was icy. Same with the parking lot---very slippery.
After parking Jaybird I nearly fell as I stepped out the door.

I didn't feel much like getting "chained up" to walk down to the lake to take pics on a crappy day
So I took a few of B&C and went on back to work.

Bobbie and Clyde are great to photograph, but they can difficult subjects at times and especially in snow.
The contrast between a coal black bird and pure white snow is....well--a LOT 8)
And they keep moving which makes it more challenging.

I'm still learning. I'll be learning forever. The tracking focus and spot metering function help.
I was able to get three decent shots of Bonnie this time.
Even Clyde was slipping on the ice as he walked. Short video clip of that later.

pete

Grey day. Not a day for views. Apgar Mt. I made it B&W since it was almost B&W in color

Image

[bJust a bit farther up the road--"Helicopter City".
For new visitors---Apgar Mt and this shot are the first good glimpses looking into the park when driving from Kalispell.[/b]

Image

West Glacier looks a tad different in August.

Image

"Eddies". My tire tracks show the 4" or so of new snow Saturday night. I was hoping for a better day. New snow always makes things look so "pure and clean".

Image

Image

For the benefit of new folks, the small building to the right of the ugly old dude's head was the Visitor's Center until recently

Image

The entrance to Apgar CG. The "settled" snow is up nearly to the gate top---however deep that makes it.

Image

Winter campers at the Apgar picnic area where overnight camping is allowed during the winter.

Image

These next three pictures are of Bonnie. Bonnie is tough to get pics of, especially when she is vocalizing. Ravens blink their nictitating membrane when making some calls--and those blinks really screw an otherwise good shot.

This next batch are Clyde

Image

Leaving, I parked on the outgoing side of the lot and walked over to the outhouse.
I told Clyde that following me to the outhouse wasn't necessary, but Clyde does pretty much what he wants.

Here are some more snaps from Apgar and Lake McDonald Lodge on Friday Feb 9.
I'm glad the weather cleared up so my sister and brother in law could see how beautiful the area is covered in snow.
I'll put some more up but have to get going. They're leaving today at 2PM

This is the album link. I'll post the rest of the images here later tonight

Vickie and Bobbie. Unfortunately, just before this picture Vic stepped on the bare ice(right of where she is now) without realizing how slick it was. She fell hard on her back whacking her head. It scared the crap out of me. She's OK but has a big knot of the back of her head.

Did a race today on 17 km of artificial snow (x2 for 34 km). Painful yet fun?
