June 13-15, 2022 Storm

Post by Ear Mountain »

A major precipitation event is forecast for Glacier National Park for the start of this week:
National Weather Service West Glacier Region
333 AM MDT Mon Jun 13 2022

...WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 6 PM THIS EVENING TO 6 AM
MDT WEDNESDAY ABOVE 5000 FEET...

.TODAY...Rain likely until late afternoon, then rain and snow
likely late in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation near
100 percent. Cooler. Little or no new snow accumulation. Highs in
the 40s to lower 50s. Southwest winds 15 to 25 mph. Gusts up to
35 mph in the afternoon.
.TONIGHT...Very windy with southwest winds 25 to 35 mph. Rain and
snow likely. Chance of precipitation 90 percent. Snow level
5500 feet. Snow accumulations of 2 to 5 inches. Lows in the 30s.
.TUESDAY...Very windy with southwest winds 25 to 35 mph. Rain
likely. Snow likely. Chance of precipitation 90 percent. Snow may
be heavy at times in the morning. Snow level 5000 feet. Snow
accumulations of 3 to 6 inches. Highs in the upper 30s to mid
40s.
.TUESDAY NIGHT...Rain and snow likely in the evening, then a
chance of rain and snow after midnight. Chance of precipitation
90 percent. Snow level 6000 feet. Light snow accumulations. Lows
in the mid 30s to lower 40s. Southwest winds 15 to 25 mph with
gusts to around 35 mph.
.WEDNESDAY...Mostly cloudy. A 20 percent chance of rain in the
morning. Highs in the upper 40s to mid 50s. Southwest winds to
15 mph.
.WEDNESDAY NIGHT...Mostly cloudy in the evening then becoming
partly cloudy. Lows in the mid 30s to lower 40s.
Fortunately (my opinion) the forecast snow amount has been decreased from the amounts previously forecast.

Also heavy rain coupled with snowmelt has caused some flooding in the park over the previous weekend. This resulted in closure of Loop A in the St. Mary campground and closure of the Avalanche Lake trail. There was also water flowing across Sun Road resulting in water flowing through the Sprague campground.

Thanks for this info, Ear Mountain.

Folks who have been shut out of Yellowstone are talking about Glacier as an alternative, without checking weather or whether GttSR is open, never mind informing themselves of entry requirements.

Yellowstone is in a truly desperate situation, with numerous road washouts and bridges swept away in northern tier and gateway towns, the latter now isolated and without electricity or, often, drinking water. A 3rd year of hardship for local residents who rely on summer visitation to pay the bills.
